No. 11 CNU Women's Soccer Shuts Out Arcadia University on the Road Monday, 3-0

GLENSIDE, Pa. -- In an impressive return to the pitch after nearly two weeks from their last completed match, the 11th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team shut out previously unbeaten Arcadia University (5-1-1) on the road Monday afternoon, 3-0. The Captains (4-0-0) blanketed the Knights just 28 hours after returning to campus following a mandatory evacuation last Wednesday morning in anticipation of Hurricane Florence.

Facing a team coming off a win over 19th-ranked Misericordia on Saturday, the Captains handed the Knights their first loss of the season with two goals in the first and one more in the second half. The high-powered Captains offense looked rested, not rusted, as three different players scored goals in the contest. Coming into the contest, the Knights defense had allowed only three goals in their first six games, as Christopher Newport doubled it in 90 minutes on Monday.

In the 18th minute of action, sophomore Riley Cook netted the eventual game-winning goal on a penalty kick attempt. It was Cook's second goal of the season from the penalty spot, and third overall. As a freshman, Cook led the Captains and ranked 34th nationally with five game-winning goals; Monday's tally was her first winner of her second season.

With an early lead, CNU settled into a groove offensively and pressured Arcadia's goalkeeper Brianna Williams several more times in the first half. In the 28th minute, the Captains struck again on the first goal of the season from senior Taylor Hudgins. Her classmate, and CNU's leading scorer Gabby Gillis set up the goal with her second assist of the season and first of two helpers on Monday.

Facing a 2-0 deficit, the home team ramped up the pressure in the second half looking to get on the board against the vaunted CNU defense. Sophomore goalkeeper Haley Eiser stoned an attempt by Karlie Flowers in the 54th minute and, after being held to zero in the first half, the Knights earned five corner kicks in the first 23 minutes of the second stanza. It was CNU, though, that would tickle the twine for an insurance tally in the 71st minute.

Gillis picked up her second assist on the second career goal by rookie Hailey Price. The freshman has now scored on two of her four shots on-goal this season, with her first collegiate tally coming against Saint Benedict in the opening weekend.

Arcadia continued to pressure Eiser, putting two more shots on-goal, but the Captains defense of Shaye Doherty, Keiley McCarthy, and Lulu Manley managed to secure the shutout for their sophomore netminder. Eiser made four saves for her first career clean sheet.

CNU will stay on the road for the next two games, starting with a Thursday evening contest at Roanoke College. Kickoff against the Maroons is slated for 5:00 pm. The Captains were also scheduled to travel to Methodist University on Sunday, September 23, but that game has been postponed to October 3 due to the effects of Hurricane Florence.
