NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Katie Crofford and
Megan O'Hara collected All-Tournament honors and helped lead the 23rd-ranked Christopher Newport volleyball team to a pair of victories on the final day of the Captains Classic as CNU swept Keystone, 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-16), before upending No. 24 Stevenson, 3-2 (15-25, 25-12, 22-25, 25-15, 16-14), on Saturday at the Freeman Center.
During Saturday's matches, O'Hara erupted for 25 kills while hitting at a .480 clip. Meanwhile, Crofford added 18 blasts, three aces, and 21 digs. Along with the decorated competitors,
Katie Piper contributed 17 kills and 21 digs, while
Ashley Burgess dished out 40 assists and clubbed a team-high four aces during the doubleheader.
With the two victories, Christopher Newport improves to 3-1 on the season. On the other side, Keystone now sits at 0-4, and Stevenson is 1-3.
In the opener against Keystone, O'Hara torched the Giants with 12 kills on just 25 swings.
Hope Webb also chipped in with a double-double after adding 18 assists and 15 digs, while Piper led the team with 16 ups. Rounding out the defensive stars,
Josie Lucernoni contributed 13 digs, and both
Mackenzie Wright and
Maddie Carter tallied three blocks apiece.
Helping the team post a sizzling .316 hitting percentage, Wright roped six kills on 11 attempts, and Crofford added six on 15 in the victory over Keystone.
Following a short break, the Captains returned to the court for a top-25 showdown with Stevenson. For the second straight day, CNU overcame a two-sets-to-one deficit to pull out the victory after sweeping the final two frames. During the contest, O'Hara punctuated a tremendous afternoon with 13 kills and a .480 hitting percentage. Balancing out the attack, Piper also launched 13 darts, and Crofford contributed 12 to go along with 14 digs.
Continuing her solid work on the back row, Lucernoni pocketed 14 digs against the Mustangs. Webb and Burgess also secured nine apiece while combining for 47 assists.
Guided by the squad's efficient attack against Stevenson, the Captains established a new program record for the highest single-match hitting percentage in a five-set contest. CNU eventually finished with a .314 mark against Stevenson, topping the previous high of .289 set against N.C. Wesleyan on September 18, 2007.
Earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team, O'Hara finished the weekend with 41 kills and a .364 hitting percentage. She also added 10 blocks and nine digs. Meanwhile, Crofford had 27 kills, 45 digs, five blocks, and a .957 recepetion percentage during the four contests.
The two Captains were joined on the All-Tournament Team by Muhlenberg's Maya Illovsky and Shannon Hubert, Mary Washington's Ryan Cho and Leslie Walters, Susquehanna's Riley O'Dowd and Kody Dillon, and Stevenson's Moriah Savage and Katie Leftridge.
Christopher Newport will return to action on September 7 when the squad opens up the Juniata / Asics Invitational with a 7 p.m. showdown with the host Eagles.
