NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- With rain in the forecast for Saturday in Newport News, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport baseball team will be forced to wait another day before attempting to add to the second longest win streak in program history. A postponement to Sunday for the Captains' Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader against Marymount University was announced on Friday, with CNU now set to toss out the first pitch at Captains Park at Noon on Sunday, April 8.
Christopher Newport has won 15 straight games, improving to 23-4 with a perfect 7-0 record in conference play. After a one-run loss to Salisbury on Thursday, Marymount fell to 12-11 overall with a 4-3 record against league foes. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for both games, with links at CNUsports.com/live.
The Captains moved into a tie for the national lead in home runs after another powerful showing on Wednesday, blasting four home runs at Southern Virginia University. CNU now has 30 long balls this season, tied with WPI (Worcester Polytechnic Institute) for the country's lead in total home runs. Leading the way for the Captains are senior
Brandon Ginch and junior
Nicholas Baham with seven blasts each. Junior
Seth Woodard has added six and all three players rank in the top 20 nationally individually.
The trio leads a potent CNU lineup that is hitting .315 as a team and reaching base in over 42% of at-bats. The defense has also been exceptional, with a .970 fielding percentage as a team with only two players committing more than a pair of errors this season.
Marymount comes into Sunday's twin bill hitting .308 led by junior utility man Conner Hall, scorching through the first 23 games with a .440 average. Hall leads the team with 17 doubles while also leading the team in hits, runs scored, slugging, and on-base percentage. He has 24 RBI, just behind team leader Luke Tyree's 25, who has blasted five home runs.
Following Sunday's doubleheader, the Captains will have a busy week ahead, hosting Mary Washington on Tuesday, April 10 at 3:00 pm before traveling to Salisbury on Thursday and Frostburg State for two more on Saturday.
