On the other side of the field, Roanoke enters the midweek battle on a two-game skid but has played a challenging schedule so far this year. The team's only losses have come against programs currently ranked in the top-20. The Maroons fell to No. 8 Denison, 11-10, No. 5 Wesleyan, 18-5, and No. 16 Washington & Lee, 11-10. The squad also boasts a 13-9 victory over Dickinson, who is currently ranked ninth nationally.
Featuring an electric attack, RC boasts the country's 15th-ranked scoring offense, which is averaging 14.89 goals-per-game. The squad is also slotted eighth in assists (81) and 20th in shooting percentage (.347). On an individual level, Owen Curry is 14th in the NCAA with a .536 shooting percentage after capitalizing on 15 of his 22 shots. Meanwhile, Garritt Schwarz has a team-high 26 goals, and Jason Sarro boasts 36 points. Between the pipes, Ian Davies has started all nine games and compiled a .568 save percentage and a 9.64 goals-against-average.
Wednesday's match-up only marks the third all-time meeting between the two programs. The squads have split the previous two battles, including an 11-7 win by the Captains in 2016. Incidentally, current CNU assistant coach
Zach Thomas has been on the winning sideline in both games after serving as an assistant at Roanoke during the 2012 showdown before joining the Christopher Newport staff.
Following the midweek contest, CNU will return to action on Saturday when the team heads to St. Mary's (Md.) for a 1 p.m. game.
