NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Senior
Alexandra Drye moved into a tie for fifth all-time in doubles victories to highlight a dominant 8-1 win over regionally-ranked Centre College (4-7) on Sunday morning. The 26th-ranked CNU women's tennis team improved to 6-3 overall this season with their fifth straight victory.
Paired with senior
McKinney Harwood for the win at No. 1 doubles, Drye captured her 56th career win in pairs play. She ties Brittany Stevens ('08) and joins the top five all-time in CNU lore. Next up on the all-time chart is Frannie Shivar ('08), who graduated with 57 career wins.
On Sunday, Drye and Harwood captured an 8-4 win over Abigail Kent and Aliza Williams for the win at No. 1 doubles. The Captains swept doubles play with another 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, where
Kate Huck and
Johanna Ranta-aho downed Caroline Stallings and Emily Zelichenok. On the third line,
Emily Morgan and
Isabelle Wessel shut out their opponents, 8-0, in Emma Ramsey and Kenny Snow.
Moving into singles play with a 3-0 lead, the Captains would capture five of the six matches in individual play to secure the 8-1 win.
Johanna Ranta-aho,
McKinney Harwood, and
Isabelle Wessel each captured multiple wins in the match. Ranta-aho won at No. 1 over Kent (6-2, 7-5); Harwood earned a hard-fought win over Williams at No. 2 (6-4, 6-7 (6), 10-8); and Wessel managed a straight set win over Zelichenok at No. 4 (6-1, 6-2).
The remaining two matches were won by
Claire Dockrill over Kenny Snow (6-1, 6-3) at No. 5 and an impressive performance by
Meili Konell over Emma Ramsey (6-0, 6-1) at No. 6.
Christopher Newport will open conference play this weekend, taking on Southern Virginia University to start Capital Athletic Conference action at a 4:00 pm on March 23.
