NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport basketball teams head into the final week of the regular season, as the Captains hit the road for a Saturday doubleheader at Penn State-Harrisburg. The women's game will begin at 1:00 p.m. followed by the men's action at 3:00 p.m. at Capital Union Building in Middletown, Pa.
The CNU men's and women's squads have just three games left in the regular season.
Bill Broderick's women's squad is 20-2 overall and 14-1 in the CAC, tied for the top spot with Marymount. The Captains are ranked ninth in the nation and have won nine straight games, most recently a 93-57 victory at home over Southern Virginia on Wednesday night. Sophomore
Kiana Kirkland recorded a new career high with 20 points as the Captains notched their 20th victory, a plateau they have achieved 11 times in the last 12 seasons.
The Christopher Newport men's team also is coming off a triumph over Southern Virginia at the Freeman Center on Wednesday evening. The Captains held off the Knights, 76-62, to improve to 17-5 overall and 11-4 in the CAC. CNU remains in second place in the conference standings, two games behind York. Sophomore Luther Gibbs registered his first career double-double with 13 points and ten rebounds, with all 13 points coming in the second half. Senior Aaron McFarland topped the squad in scoring with 20 points, and now has 1,406 for his career in 111 games played. He is tenth on the CNU all-time scoring list.
Both Penn State-Harrisburg squads are in the midst of losing skids. The women's team has a mark of 6-16 overall and 1-14 in the CAC. The Lions have dropped seven straight games. The men's team is currently also 6-16 and 2-13 in the conference, and will bring a six-game losing streak into Saturday's play. Both squads were beaten on Thursday night at home by York.
Both CNU squads defeated Penn State-Harrisburg when they met at the Freeman Center back on January 3rd. The women's games saw the Captains cruise to an 86-40 victory, while the men held off the Lions, 73-63. The women are 9-0 all-time vs. the Lions while the men are 8-1 and have won eight straight in the series.
Saturday's games will be streamed live on CNUsports.com/live with the action beginning at 12:50 p.m. The men's game will be broadcast as well on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at approximately 2:40 p.m.
