Schedule Change for CNU Baseball; Captains Host Pair of ODAC Teams on Tuesday & Wednesday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- With rain in the forecast Thursday, head coach John Harvell has announced the six-game homestand will end one day earlier as the Christopher Newport baseball matchup against Randolph-Macon has been moved up to Wednesday with a 2:30 pm start. First, the Captains will welcome Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday with first pitch slated for 2:00 pm as they look to extend a four-game winning streak.

Christopher Newport's win streak has seen them improve their overall record to 10-2 while outscoring opponents 47-7 in the roll. Overall this season, CNU is pouring in over eight runs per game while allowing less than three as the dominant offensive start has been paired by an exceptional pitching performance.

On the mound, the Captains have been led by Thomas Packert (2-0) and Logan Harrelson (1-0) with seven of the first ten starts. Packert earned a win over 11th-ranked Oswego State on Sunday and Harrelson struck out nine batters as part of a shutout against Susquehanna on Friday. Two freshmen also earned victories during the week as Gray Goodrich (1-0) and Josh Husby (1-0) impressed in their first collegiate starts.

Out of the bullpen, sophomore Brian Owens has been difficult to handle, striking out 17 batters in 7.0 innings of relief. He has allowed just two hits and has now retired 17 straight batters with 14 K's. Senior closer Joe Burris has made a team-high six appearances and boasts eight strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work.

Offensively, Christopher Newport has powered past opponents with nine home runs and 33 extra-base knocks already this season. Juniors Seth Woodard and Nicholas Baham have been the primary source of the power production, combining for four home runs, 29 RBI, and nine doubles. Rookie Conner Clark has been getting on at a sensational clip ahead of their at-bats, hitting .355 with a .535 on-base percentage. He also is a perfect 6-for-6 on the basepaths this year.

Eastern Mennonite is off to a 6-4 start with Tuesday's trip to Newport News ending a four-game homestand for the Royals. Junior Zach Roberts is hitting .400 with a team-best seven RBI and 9 runs scored to lead the squad offensively, while senior Damon Frazier (1-1) leads the pitching staff with 12 strikeouts and a 3.86 ERA.

Randolph-Macon, receiving votes in the preseason D3baseball.com Top 25, is off to a 5-0 start including head coach Ray Hetrick's 300th career victory in their last game. The Yellow Jackets have allowed just seven runs in their first five games, led by junior righty Colin Selby (2-0) with 18 strikeouts in 11.0 innings of work. At the dish, senior Joseph Tuzzolo is leading the way with a .412 average, 7 RBI and 5 runs scored.

Both games will be available in a video webcast at CNUsports.com/live -- live stats will also be available.
