NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Looking to continue its winning ways, the 20th-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will host Hampden-Sydney in a non-conference battle at Captains Turf Field on Saturday at 6 p.m.
Entering the match-up, CNU currently sits at 3-0 on the season, including 2-0 at home. The squad has won 12 straight contests at Captains Turf Field dating back to April 19, 2016. That is tied for the third-longest active streak in the country.
Meanwhile, Hampden-Sydney sits at 3-1 this year, including 1-1 on the road. The team's only setback came against top-ranked Salisbury in the season opener on February 4. For their work this season, the Tigers are currently receiving votes in the latest USILA National Coaches Poll.
For those fans unable to attend Saturday's contest, live stats will be available at CNUsports.com. The Captains will also provide a broadcast of the action with Jake Myers and Andy McGregor on the call. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.
On Wednesday, Christopher Newport picked up its third straight victory behind a high-powered offensive attack.
Dylan Rice continued his sensational season with five points, including three goals.
Matthew Crist and
Griffin Hanes also contributed hat-tricks. Meanwhile, the Captains received contributions from all over the field as long-poles
Conor James and
Phoenix Hines both scored goals, while
Tony Cruz added two points to go along with a 12-for-17 effort at the 'X.'
Overall this season, Rice already has 10 goals, while Crist has 10 points, including a team-high five assists. Deal,
Drew Magnusson, and
Shane McKenna have all scored at least four times apiece as well. Additionally, Cruz has won 66 percent of his faceoff attempts,
Max Wayne has forced a team-leading seven turnovers, and
Scott McAneney has 22 saves and a 7.27 goals-against-average.
On the other side, Hampden-Sydney has found its groove following a 16-7 setback against No. 1 Salisbury. Since their loss, the Tigers have won three straight tilts, including a 14-10 triumph over Catholic on Wednesday. HSC was buoyed by an eight-goal third quarter against the Cardinals, while Hunter Brown finished with a hat-trick during the win.
So far this season, Ian Levin leads Hampden-Sydney with 14 points. Brown also has 13, while Chandler Shaheen has eight goals as well. On faceoffs, Wilson Booth has won 34 of his 70 battles, and freshman Jake Brummett has gone 19-for-33. Defensively, Marshall Via has a team-high five caused turnovers, while Mitch Renfrow sports a .514 save percentage.
In 11 all-time meetings between the two programs, the Tigers hold a 7-4 lead. Before making a run to the third round of the NCAA Tournament last year, Hampden-Sydney defeated CNU, 13-10, on February 25. Levin led HSC with six points during that battle, while Magnusson contributed a hat-trick for the Captains.
Following this weekend's tilt, Christopher Newport will kick off Capital Athletic Conference action on March 3 with a 4 p.m. showdown at Southern Virginia.
