Men's Basketball Championship Game Saturday as Captains Host York Looking for Three-Peat

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - For the third straight season, the Freeman Center will host the Capital Athletic Conference Championship Saturday as the Captains entertain the Spartans of York College. Tipoff time is set for 2:00 p.m.

The Captains, 21-5 and riding a five-game winning streak, have won the last two CAC titles with home victories over Salisbury in the title game. CNU advanced to the championship with a 90-74 victory over Mary Washington on Thursday night behind senior Aaron McFarland's career-high 35-point performance. McFarland made all 16 free throws he attempted, and moved into ninth place on the school's all-time scoring list.

The matchup with York will be the first post-season meeting of the schools. CNU and York split their two regular-season games with each winning at home by a ten-point margin. Just last Saturday, Christopher Newport beat York, 81-71, on Senior Night to conclude the regular season and give the Captains the top seed in the CAC tourney. York, ranked 12th in the nation, is the second seed and won on Thursday at home over Salisbury, 75-59, in the semi-finals. The Spartans are now 22-4 entering Saturday's title tilt.

CNU and York have met a dozen times in the all-time series, and the Captains hold a 10-2 advantage. The Captains have won ten of their last 11 games in addition to winning five straight. This marks the fifth straight appearance in the CAC title game since the Captains joined the conference. Saturday's winner will receive an automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship beginning next weekend. CNU is looking to advance for the third straight season and 22nd time in program history.

Saturday's CAC Championship will be streamed live on CNUsports.com/live, and will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 1:40 p.m.

Tickets for the championship will be available at the Freeman Center prior to Saturday's game.
