NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The regular season comes to an end Saturday night for the Christopher Newport men's and women's basketball teams, as the Captains host the Spartans of York College at the Freeman Center. The women's game starts at 6:00 p.m. followed by the men's game at approximately 8:00 p.m.
It will be Senior Night as the Captains honor their senior members, and both games will have post-season seeding ramifications. The CNU women are currently tied atop the CAC with Marymount, while the men are a game back of York in the CAC men's standings, setting up the conference-deciding matchup between the Captains and Spartans.
Both CNU squads are coming off victories on Wednesday night at Mary Washington. The men recorded a 75-71 win after the women had posted an 80-53 verdict. Sophomore Cutch Ellis led the men's attack with his first career double-double, 19 points and 13 rebounds, both career highs.
John Krikorian's team is now 19-5 overall and 13-4 in the CAC, a game behind York. A victory over the Spartans Saturday night would leave the teams tied, but the Captains would claim the top seed due to the tiebreaker of record vs. the next highest finishing team.
Senior
Sam Porter led the women's squad Wednesday night with 17 points in just 19 minutes of action as the 10th-ranked Captains jumped to an early 15-0 lead and were never challenged ny the Eagles.
Bill Broderick's squad is now 22-2 overall and 16-1 in the CAC, tied with Marymount, who will end the regular season Saturday at Mary Washington. If the Captains and Saints end up in a tie, a coin flip would be used as the tiebreaker to determine the top and second seed.
Christopher Newport and York met earlier this season in York, Pa., on January 13th. The men suffered a 79-69 loss to the Spartans after the women held on for a 75-72 victory. The York men's squad is ranked eighth in the nation and is 21-3 overall and 14-4 in the CAC. The York women's squad is 16-8 overall and 12-5 in the CAC.
Following the completion of the women's game Saturday, seven seniors will be honored on Senior Night.
Makeda Wright,
Bailey Dufrene,
Jasmine Bonivel,
Devon Byrd,
Makenzie Fancher,
Sam Porter, and
Anitra Thomas will all be playing in their last regular-season game at the Freeman Center. Prior to tipoff of the men's game, seniors Aaron McFarland and Spencer Marin will also be honored.
No matter what happens on Saturday, Christopher Newport has already guaranteed a finish in the top two of the conference in both men's and women's play. That means the Captains will be hosting a semi-final doubleheader next Thursday night, February 22nd, in the CAC Tournament at the Freeman Center. Game times will be at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. with opponents to be determined.
Tickets for Saturday's doubleheader will be available at the Freeman Center Ticket Office. The action will also be streamed live on CNUsports.com/live, and the men's game will be broadcast on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM).
