NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport and Randolph-Macon renew their rivalry on Saturday, with the teams squaring off at 4:00 p.m. at the Freeman Center. The Captains are 6-1, while the Yellow Jackets are 10-0 and ranked 16th in the nation.
John Krikorian's squad is coming off a 77-64 loss at Lynchburg last Sunday, the first defeat of the season for CNU after six straight victories. The Captains shot just 37 percent from the field, and 27 percent from three-point range. It also marked the first time this year CNU was out-rebounded (44-32).
The Captains are led by senior
Marcus Carter, who is averaging team highs in points (17.4) and rebounds (7.0) per game. Carter is 11th on the CNU all-time scoring list with 1,426 points, and is 53 points shy of Mike Cherry for tenth position on the list.
Randolph-Macon is fresh off a 92-71 triumph Wednesday night at Hampden-Sydney, and improved to 10-0 overall and 4-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Josh Merkel, formerly the head coach at Salisbury, is now in his fourth season leading the Yellow Jackets.Â
The non-conference battle Saturday will be the 28th all-time between the schools, with Randolph-Macon holding an 18-9 edge in the series. CNU has won the last six meetings, including a 69-64 victory to open the season a year ago. R-MC took the first nine games in the series when the program was playing at the Division II level. Since the Yellow Jackets became a Division III member, the schools have split 18 games.
All Captains games are broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM). The pre-game show will begin at 3:40 p.m.
