21st-Ranked Captains Host Virginia Wesleyan Sunday at the Freeman Center

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Sick of long lines, sold-out items, and packed stores? Take a break on Sunday and enjoy an exciting day of college basketball at the Freeman Center. There won't be too much bustle, but plenty of hustle as the CNU women's and men's squads host a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. The men's team, ranked 21st in the country this week, will renew its long-running rivalry with Virginia Wesleyan, with tip off set for 4:00 p.m.

The Captains are 7-1 on the season, and are coming off a 72-61 triumph last Saturday over previously-undefeated Randolph-Macon. John Krikorian's squad has had an eight-day break for final exams since beating the Yellow Jackets. Senior Marcus Carter led the way for the Captains with 18 points and eight rebounds, while junior Cutch Ellis added 17 points and seven boards, and sophomore Jason Aigner contributed 14 points and eight rebounds. Carter, who is 11th on CNU's all-time scoring list, is just 35 points shy of Mike Cherry for tenth on the list. Carter has scored 1,444 points in his career as a Captain.

Virginia Wesleyan is 5-3 heading into Sunday's tilt, and the Marlins have also not played since last Saturday, when Dave Macedo's squad won at Roanoke, 63-56. Sunday's battle will be the 86th all-time, and the Captains hold a 49-36 edge in the always-competitive series. Christopher Newport has won three straight games over VWU, and four of the last five. Last season in Virginia Beach, the Captains prevailed over the Marlins, 71-68.

Tickets for the twin bill will be available Sunday at the Freeman Center Ticket Office. The men's game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 3:40 p.m.

Sunday's game will be the last action for the Captains prior to a 12-day holiday break. CNU will host the Captains Shootout at the Freeman Center on December 28th and 29th.
