Captains Host Wesley College Saturday Afternoon at POMOCO Stadium in Season Finale

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The 2018 football season comes to a close on Saturday, as the Captains of Christopher Newport host the Wolverines of Wesley College. Kickoff for the New Jersey Athletic Conference game is set for 1:00 p.m. at POMOCO Stadium.

The Captains are riding a three-game winning streak and are 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the NJAC. Art Link's squad is coming off a 38-13 road win last week at the College of New Jersey. Wesley is 6-3 heading into play on Saturday, and the Wolverines are 5-3 in the NJAC. The Wolverines surprised previously-unbeaten Salisbury last week, coming from behind to record a 19-13 overtime win over the Sea Gulls.

While both teams have enjoyed successful seasons, the Captains and Wolverines can both look back and dream of what could have been. CNU's two defeats this year have both come in overtime, while Wesley's three losses have all been by just one point.

"Wesley is a tremendous program and they will give us a great challenge," Head Coach Art Link said. "We've been playing well and have a lot of momentum. We want to finish the season on a high note and honor our senior class the right way."

Senior Day ceremonies will take place prior to kickoff as 19 members of the Captains play their final game in a CNU uniform. The matchup will be the sixth all-time with the Wolverines, and Wesley holds a 4-1 edge in the series. Last year in Dover, Delaware, the Wolverines pulled away in the second half en route to a 31-14 triumph. Two years ago at POMOCO Stadium, the Captains recorded a 42-28 victory over Wesley.

Christopher Newport's defense has been solid all season, as the Captains this week are seventh in the country in overall defense. CNU is 14th in the nation in run defense, yielding just 65.6 yards per game. On offense, junior quarterback Jack Anderson was selected the NJAC's Offensive Player of the Week this week for the third time this season. Anderson set a new school passing mark last week when he threw for 478 yards at TCNJ. He also threw for four touchdowns, giving him 18 on the season with just seven interceptions.

Tailgate lots will open at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and ticket sales will begin at 11:00 a.m. at POMOCO Stadium. Gates will open at 12:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 12:30 p.m.
