Anderson's Record-Setting Performance Leads Captains to 38-13 Victory at TCNJ

EWING, N.J. - Junior quarterback Jack Anderson set a new Christopher Newport passing record Saturday, throwing for 478 yards in a 38-13 triumph over the College of New Jersey on a breezy and cool day at Lions Stadium. The victory was the third straight for the Captains, who improved to 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.

Anderson, from Great Falls, Va., shattered the previous record of 400 yards set by K.J. Kearney in 2016 against Wesley. He completed 29 of 45 passes and threw four touchdown passes against the Lions.

"Jack was something special today," Head Coach Art Link said following the win. "He had it going and really did a great job of leading our offense. I'm thrilled with the way we played today and couldn't be more proud of our overall effort."

Anderson connected with senior Joshua Davis twice and sophomore Cole Blais twice to account for his four touchdown throws. Earlier this year, Anderson tallied five scoring passes at Rowan in a 39-6 CNU victory. Blais finished the day with ten catches for 212 yards, the fifth-highest receiving total in school history. Davis also made ten grabs for 172 yards, and now has a dozen career touchdowns.

After TCNJ had opened the game with a field goal on its initial possession, the Captains marched downfield on their first possession as Anderson hit Davis on consecutive passes of 18 and then 50 yards for the first CNU score of the day just 4:11 into the first quarter. The two-play, 68-yard drive gave Christopher Newport a 7-3 edge. Early in the second quarter, Anderson and Davis combined again on a 15-yard scoring pass to culminate an eight-play, 65-yard drive that began late in the first quarter. CNU held a 14-3 advantage until TCNJ posted its second field goal of the day to make it 14-6 with 1:44 to play in the first half.

The Captains added to the lead in the final minute of the first half, as Anderson hit Blais from four yards out to make it a 21-6 game at the half. CNU traveled 82 yards on eight plays in just 1:27 to open up the 15-point halftime lead.

Anderson went right back to Blais early in the third quarter to finish off the Captains first possession of the second half. The duo connected on a 42-yard scoring pass to give CNU a 28-6 lead, capping a six-play, 75-yard drive. After TCNJ scored its only touchdown of the day, the lead was cut back to 15 after three quarters, 28-13.

Christopher Newport put the game away in the final stanza by adding a field goal by senior Dylan Curran from 23 yards out, and junior Nehemiah Harris concluded the scoring with a 32-yard touchdown run for the 38-13 final verdict.

CNU's defense picked off three passes, two by junior Damian Jiggetts and one by senior Torin Prentice, who led the Captains with nine tackles for the day. Christopher Newport also recorded three sacks.

The victory came in the final road game of the 2018 season, and marked the first time in program history the Captains have gone through a season with an unbeaten road record. CNU was 4-0 away from home this year, with its scheduled game at Frostburg State canceled due to Hurricane Florence.

The College of New Jersey had a two-game winning streak snapped and the Lions are now 2-7 overall and 2-6 in the NJAC. Christopher Newport has now won three of four games with TCNJ in the all-time series. Christopher Newport concludes the 2018 season next Saturday at POMOCO Stadium with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff vs. Wesley.

"We want to finish strong and keep our momentum going," Link continued. "We'll honor our seniors and work hard against a very good Wesley team. I hope we have a big crowd at POMOCO Stadium to end our season the right way."
