Nationally-Ranked CNU Women's Basketball Flies By Eagles On The Road, 102-56

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Five Captains finished in double figures and the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team forced a season-high 42 turnovers in a 102-56 win at Bridgewater College (4-2) on Wednesday night. CNU improved to 6-0 after scoring 100 points in a game away from home for the first time since the 2015-16 season.

The Captains defense was impressive again on Wednesday night, forcing 42 turnovers and scoring 58 points off of those takeaways. CNU nabbed 20 steals in the contest, led by four from rookie Marlise Brunson

Freshman Natalie Terwilliger continued her stellar start to her first season, notching her fourth double-double of the season to lead the way for the Captains against the Eagles. Terwilliger was 5-for-8 from the floor and scored 10 points while grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. She added three assists, two blocks, and one steal, all in just 15 minutes of action.

Joining Terwilliger in double figures were three starters and another reserve as five CNU players finished with at least 10 points. Junior Kiana Kirkland led all scorers with 15 points while freshman Sondra Fan followed up her season-best 15-point performance on Sunday with another 12 in Wednesday night's matchup. Seniors Jessica Daguilh, with 11, and Zhara Tannor, with 10, rounded out the top performances for CNU. Daguilh also grabbed eight rebounds while Tannor dished seven assists in the game.

The first quarter saw Christopher Newport transform a 5-2 deficit into a 17-5 lead over the span of just two minutes as the CNU defense took control. Bridgewater turned the ball over eight times in the 12-0 CNU run that saw the Captains take the lead for good. Madison Howdyshell finished on a layup, Kirkland scored six points in the stretch, and Fan buried a three-pointer as part of the spurt.

CNU carried a 31-17 lead into the second quarter, and tacked on another 10 points to the halftime edge with a 54-30 advantage at the break. CNU shot 39.1% (18-46) in the first 20 minutes and held Bridgewater to just 26.5% (9-34).

In the third quarter, the Eagles managed just nine points against the suffocating Captains defense, going just 3-for-11 from the floor. The Captains, meanwhile, shot 58.3% in the third stanza by knocking down seven of 12 shots including a perfect 3-for-3 effort from long range. Fan hit one and Tannor buried a pair of triples to anchor the third-quarter performance.

All four of Brunson's steals and nine total thefts for the Captains came in the fourth quarter as the defense capped off an impressive performance from start to finish. CNU held Bridgewater to just 34.5% shooting (19-55) and 28.6% (6-21) from beyond the arc.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday, December 1 as they take on 11th-ranked Messiah College in the Freeman Center.
