Captains Ranked 22nd Thanks to 4-0 Start...CNU Travels to Shenandoah Wednesday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport men's basketball squad has moved into the Top 25, ranked 22nd by D3hoops.com in its weekly poll released Tuesday. The Captains are off to a 4-0 start, and captured the Holiday Inn/CNU Invitational this past weekend at the Freeman Center with victories over Methodist and John Carroll.

The Captains travel to Winchester, Va., on Wednesday for a non-conference battle with Shenandoah University. Tip off time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Wilkins Center. The Hornets are 2-2 so far this season.

John Krikorian's squad erupted for 109 points in Sunday's Championship game of the Invitational. CNU downed 20th-ranked John Carroll, 109-73, as senior Marcus Carter led the way with 24 points and five rebounds. He was named MVP of the two-day tournament, and moved into 11th place on CNU's all-time scoring list with 1,371 career points. It marked the first time the Captains have gone over the 100-point mark since January of 2013.

Carter tops the team in scoring and rebounding through the first four games, averaging 16.8 points and 7.5 boards per game. The Captains have won all four games by double-digit margins, and have out-rebounded their opponents by an average of 45-38 per game.

Wednesday's battle with Shenandoah will be the 61st in the all-time series, with the Captains holding a 47-13 lead. Christopher Newport has won the last eight meetings, including a 74-71 triumph last year in the opening round of the Captains Shootout at the Freeman Center. This will be the first trip to the Wilkins Center for CNU, as Shenandoah's new facility opened in January.

The game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 6:40 p.m.
