NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's basketball team has opened the season with a 4-0 record and were recognized by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) after the hot start, vaulting to No. 18 in the most recent national rankings. Following the recognition, the Captains return home for a non-conference matchup on Sunday, November 25 as they take on Meredith College (0-4) at 2:00 pm.
The women's basketball matchup will be held between two men's games at the Freeman Center as part of a triple-header. First, the 2018 Holiday Inn CNU Invitational Consolation game between Thomas More and Methodist will tip off at 2:00 pm, followed by the Captains taking on the Avenging Angels in the women's bout. Finally, the CNU men's team will host John Carroll in the Invitational Championship at 4:00 pm.

Christopher Newport leads the nation in steals per game while grabbing an average of 22.0 over the first four games, and also ranks fourth nationally in turnovers forced (32.75). The CNU defense has held their first four opponents to just 50.2 points per game with a 33.8% shooting percentage.
Leading the charge offensively has been junior
Kiana Kirkland, averaging 11.8 points per game, and rookie
Natalie Terwilliger, pouring in 10.0 points per game. Senior
Jessica Daguilh is haveraging 8.3 points and 8.5 rebounds per game to help bolster the front court. In the back court, sophomore
Bailey Hodges and rookie
Jessica Foster have dished a combined 24 assists.
Meredith has opened the season suffering four straight losses to Ferrum, Roanoke, Centre, and Thomas More. The Avenging Angels are averaging 48.8 points per game while being led by sophomore Kimberly Schuh. Schuh has poured in 13.5 points per game while knocking down 51.4% of her shots.
Following the non-conference matchup on Sunday, the Captains will travel to Bridgewater College on Wednesday, November 28 for another out-of-league matchup.
