FROSTBURG, Md. -- Christopher Newport will take on a pair of non-conference opponents this weekend when they travel to the 2018 Jim Crawley Classic hosted by Frostburg State University for games on Saturday and Sunday. First, the Captains' first ever matchup against Mount Aloysius College will tip on Saturday at 6:00 pm followed by a 1:00 pm whistle against The City College of New York on Sunday.
The CNU women's basketball team has opened the year with a 2-0 start after wins over Virginia Wesleyan (77-52) and Stevenson (66-64). Mount Aloysius (0-1) opened the year with a loss to Bethany College and CCNY (1-0) picked up a win over Cedar Crest College.
The Captains Chaos defense ranks fourth nationally in steals per game with an average of 20.5 while ranking 11th in turnovers forced, with an average of 32.0 per contest. Senior
Zhara Tannor leads the defense with eight steals while sophomore
Bailey Hodges has added six thefts in the early going.
CNU has been led by three players on the offensive end averaging double figures in the early portion of the schedule. Junior
Kiana Kirkland (13.5 ppg) leads the way while senior
Jessica Daguilh (12.0 ppg) and rookie
Natalie Terwilliger (11.0 ppg) each have a double-double this season.
Mount Aloysius got a 10-point, 4-rebound performance from senior Breana Kendrick in the opener, while Machala Gibbons and Caroline Showalter each added six points. CCNY was led by Ashley Brooks in 33 minutes against Cedar Crest, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds on 7-of-12 shooting. Debra Chan also scored 10 points for the Beavers.

Following the weekend trip to Maryland, the Captains will return home for their next contest on Sunday, November 25. CNU will host Meredith College at 2:00 pm in the Freeman Center for their first post-Thanksgiving bout.
