CNU Women's Basketball Hosts Stevenson in Non-Conference Action Wednesday Evening

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's basketball team is back in action on Wednesday night, hosting Stevenson University in non-conference mid-week action. Tip is set for 6:00 pm against the Mustangs as the two teams are meeting for the first time.

The game will be played at the Freeman Center as the Captains look to improve on their 1-0 start to the season after a 77-52 win over Virginia Wesleyan in the opener. Stevenson is 0-1 after a season-opening setback to Washington & Lee, 72-64, on Saturday afternoon.

Christopher Newport was led by senior Jessica Daguilh with her sixth career double-double when she knocked down seven of nine attempts from the field for a team-high 16 points. She added a game-high 10 rebounds and 4 steals to lead the way for CNU, which featured four double-figure scorers. Sophomore Bailey Hodges poured in a career-high 16 points to tie for the team lead, while rookies Jessica Foster and Natalie Terwilliger scored 11 and 10, respectively.

The Captains will be taking on the Mustangs for the first time while boasting a 10-1 overall record against teams currently in the MAC Commonwealth. The last matchup for CNU against the conference came in 2010-11, defeating Lebanon Valley in the NCAA Sweet 16 en route to the team's first Final Four appearance. The Captains also faced Messiah from the MAC Commonwealth that season, winning 82-38 in an early season tilt.

Stevenson features a roster of just 11 players this season, led by senior guard Jonyae Curry. Curry was a second team All-Conference selection last season after averaging 12.5 points per game and is coming off a stellar performance in the Mustangs' first game, scoring 20 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Curry also had six steals in the game for Stevenson.

For fans who can not attend the game live, a video webcast and live stats will be available at CNUsports.com.

Following the Wednesday night matchup, the Captains will hit the road for the first time in 2018-19, traveling to the Jim Crawley Classic hosted by Frostburg State University. CNU takes on Mount Aloysius on Saturday, November 17 at 6:00 pm before facing off against CCNY on Sunday, November 18.
