NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In a record-shattering performance for the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team, the Captains sailed into the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship Second Round with a 10-1 win over the College of Staten Island (12-7-0) on Saturday evening. Sophomore Maddie Cochran led the offensive onslaught with a pair of goals and an assist in just 21 minutes of action.

The Captains (18-1-0) smashed the program record for goals in a postseason game, and posted one of the finest offensive performances in the history of the program with the NCAA first round victory. The previous record for goals in an NCAA Tournament game was six, set last season against Cabrini, and the 10 goals in a contest in tied for the sixth most in CNU lore. Christopher Newport posted the widest margin of victory and most goals in a game so far in this year's postseason tournament.

CNU also registered 10 assists on the ten goals in the game, which shot the 2018 season to the top of the all-time single season chart with 67 helpers this year. Nine different players picked up assists in the game while junior defender Shaye Doherty registered a pair to lead the way. Leading facilitator Maxine Borris added her 12th assist of the season before putting away her first goal of the year, which would hold up as the gamewinner.

The Captains led, 4-1, at halftime, and added six goals in the second half to run away with the first round victory. Borris and Cochran made sure CNU hit the ground running, scoring the first two goals in the first five minutes of action. Just 2:24 had expired on the clock when Borris set up Cochran for her fourth goal of the season into the left side of the goal. Then, with 4:56 of game time played, the two reversed roles as Cochran assisted on Borris' eventual gamewinner.

Six minutes later, the Captains converted on a corner kick goal when rookie Sabrina Gillis found junior defender Keiley McCarthy in the box for the finish. With the game in hand, head coach Dan Weiler was able to extend his bench for the majority of the contest, allowing the reserves to play a majority of the minutes. One of those coming off the bench that had a stellar performance was junior Holly Jacobson, who converted for her first goal of the season on her first touch of NCAA Tournament play. After CNU earned a free kick from about 30 yards out, Jacobson was subbed on during an injury timeout and proceeded to blister a hard shot into the back of the net to put the Captains ahead, 4-0.

The Dolphins from CSI scored on their very first shot of the game, coming just 32 seconds after Jacobson's tally when leading scorer Samantha LaValle snuck a low shot into the right side of the goal. LaValle scored on a pass from Natalia Sandor and cut the CNU first-half lead to three, 4-1.

At halftime, the CNU defense, featuring Lulu Manley, McCarthy, Shaye Doherty, Lauren Fitzpatrick, Lauren Ciccone, and Montana Coward had allowed just one shot. The Captains outshot Staten Island, 19-1, in the first 45 minutes.

A flood of CNU goals came in the first 22 minutes of the second half, as the Captains built a runaway victory. Leading scorer Riley Cook became the first player in program history to register 50 points in a single season when she scored her 22nd goal of the year in the 52nd minute. Junior Carson Pokorny set up Cook for the score off the outside of her right foot with a flick by the Dolphins' goalkeeper. Cook becomes just the third player in Capital Athletic Conference history to reach the half-century mark in a single year and the first to do so since 2012 when Frostburg State's Adria Graham notched a 54-point campaign.

Cook's tally was the first of three in a span of just seven and a half minutes. Cochran notched her second of the game on an assist by Doherty, and rookie Kristina Toms picked up her ninth goal of the season after another helper by Doherty. Another seven minutes later and CNU scored twice more in the span of just 46 seconds. Jacobson registered her second goal when another defender set up a long run, as rookie Lauren Fitzpatrick found Jacobson for a shot from the top of the box. Then, just moments later, rookie Karina Vasquez slotted a corner ball to senior Kayla Locklear, who crossed a picture-perfect pass across the box for fellow senior Taylor Hudgins for the finish.

Rounding out the scoring in the game, Toms added her 10th goal of the year on an assist by Montana Coward in the 88th minute. CNU scored six times on 22 shots in the second half, while the defense held Staten Island to just one shot after halftime. Overall, CNU outshot the Dolphins 41-2 including a 27-1 disparity in shots on goal.

The dominating performance in the first round moved Christopher Newport into Sunday's second round matchup, which will be against the University of Scranton (16-1-3). The Royals defeated Arcadia University, 3-1, in Saturday's other first-round game. CNU and Scranton are set to face off at 6:00 pm on Sunday at Captains Field.
