Captains Look for Third Straight Victory Saturday in Final Road Contest of 2018

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport football squad this week travels to Ewing, New Jersey, for a Saturday matinee against the College of New Jersey. Kickoff time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Lions Stadium. The Captains are 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, while TCNJ is 2-6 and 2-5. Both squads have won their last two games, and it will mark the final road game of the season for Art Link's squad.

"We've done a good job away from home this year and we want to continue our momentum," Link said. "Our guys have kept their focus in our three previous road games, and we've won them all, so we're going to do the same things that have brought us success."

The Captains are coming off a defensive struggle last Saturday at POMOCO Stadium that saw them defeat Kean University, 13-3, during Homecoming Weekend. The Lions also won at home last week in their Homecoming game over William Paterson, 24-7.

"These games against Kean and TCNJ are two that we lost last year," Link continued. "We've spent a lot of time reflecting on those losses and preparing for this stretch. Last week we found a way to win, and we're going to be challenged again this week."

CNU's defense continues to lead the way, as the Captains now have the fifth overall defense in the nation. Christopher Newport is allowing just 196 yards per game, and only 61 rushing yards, which is 11th best in the country. Junior linebacker Conner Ryan was selected the Defensive Player of the Week in the NJAC last week after recording four tackles, two and a half sacks, a forced fumble, and two pass break-ups in the home triumph.

Senior kicker/punter Dylan Curran was also honored as the Special Teams Player of the Week after converting two field goal attempts, including a 47-yarder. On offense, junior quarterback Jack Anderson didn't start last week due to knee tenderness, but entered the game in the second half to help lead the Captains to victory. He connected with sophomore Cole Blais on an 11-yard scoring pass for the only touchdown of the game early in the fourth quarter, capping a 13-play, 88-yard drive. It was Anderson's 14th touchdown pass of the season.

Saturday's game will be the fourth in the all-time series, and the Captains have won two of the three previous matchups with the Lions. TCNJ built a 21-6 lead last year and then held on at POMOCO Stadium for a 21-19 victory over the Captains

The game will be broadcast on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 12:30 p.m. Following Saturday's contest, the Captains will return home and begin preparing for the final game of 2018, a home contest vs. Wesley on Saturday, November 10th, at POMOCO Stadium.
