No. 21 CNU Women's Soccer Rolls to 3-0 Win Over Monarchs in Non-Conference Matchup Wednesday Night

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Registering the second most shots in the Dan Weiler era, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team notched it's seventh multi-goal performance of the season Wednesday night, cruising to a 3-0 win at Methodist University. The non-conference win lifted the Captains to 7-1-0 on the season while the host Monarchs fall to 5-4-0.

The potent Christopher Newport attack took 43 shots in the contest for a top-ten all-time performance on the offensive end of the field. Last year's 54 attempts against Wesley College on September 30 tied the program record and marked the most in the six seasons under head coach Dan Weiler. CNU put 16 of those attempts on frame, and found the back of the net three times.

Junior Carson Pokorny continued her hot streak for CNU, scoring twice in the contest, including the eventual game-winning goal in the first half. Sophomore Riley Cook also added a goal and an assist, while sophomore Maxine Borris pitched in her team-leading fourth helper of the year.

Pokorny, who has now registered at least one point in each of the Captains' last four games, highlighted the action with the third multi-goal game of her career. Her first goal came in the 22nd minute when she collected a loose ball at the top of the box. After finding an opening, she blistered a hard shot into the right corner of the goal for her sixth career gamewinner.

CNU peppered the Methodist goalkeeper, Maggie Hunt, with six shots on-goal in the period while taking 18 total shots. Meanwhile, the CNU defense held the home team to just one attempt, on a header from Miranda Gay in the 6th minute, but Captains' keeper Maddy Belanger made the stop.

Quickly into the second half, the Captains turned a one-goal lead into a runaway victory as they scored the second and third goals in the first ten minutes of the frame. After an early flourish that saw Gabby Gillis and Hailey Price have shots blocked in the box, Cook finished off an assist by Borris for her seventh goal. Borris' cross from the right side found Cook right in front of the goal for a tap-in score.

Less than seven minutes later, Cook set up Pokorny for the game's third and final tally. Hunt made a pair of saves on attempts by Cook and Abby Harrigan between scores, but in the 55th minute the sophomore forward saved the ball on the goal line for a cross into the box. Pokorny volleyed the shot just over the outstretched hands of the Methodist goalkeeper for her second goal of the game.

The Captains took 25 shots in the second half, putting 10 of them on net. Again, the CNU defense was suffocating, not allowing the Monarchs offense to set anything up. Methodist was held to just one more shot, off frame, and never earned a corner kick in the game. After starters Keiley McCarthy, Shaye Doherty, and Lulu Manley were relieved, Montana Coward, Lauren Ciccone, Michelle Green, and Lauren Fitzpatrick helped hold on for the shutout.

Belanger earned the win in goal with the one save and first 45 minutes of shutout soccer, while sophomore Haley Eiser finished out the clean sheet with an appearance in the second half.

CNU will now travel to Frostburg State University to take on the Bobcats in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday, October 6. Kickoff is slated for 3:00 pm from Maryland
