CNU Men's Soccer Heads Back on the Road With 7:30 Non-Conference Bout at Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Following a fantastic finish in their first home game in nearly a month last Saturday, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team will head bck on the road for the next three, starting with a non-conference battle at Virginia Wesleyan University Wednesday night. The Captains (4-4-0) will take on the Marlins (1-8-0) in the latest installment of the cross-water rivalry with kickoff slated for 7:30 pm.

For fans unable to make the trip to The Trinder Center on the campus of VWU, live stats and a live video webcast will be available. Links to both can be found on the men's soccer schedule at CNUsports.com.

Christopher Newport improved to 4-4 after their fourth straight overtime game ended with a highlight-reel header from junior defender Khari Jones. His first career goal won a double-overtime battle with Penn State Harrisburg off an assist by Michael Wilson, erasing the Captains' four-game skid and getting the team back in the win column.

The four straight games played into extra time is the most consecutive overtime games for the Captains since 1989 when CNU played in five in a row. With the overtime winner, Jones became the 11th different goal scorer for the Captains this season. Five have registered multiple goals, led by senior forward Stephen Durbin with three goals and three assists for a team-high 9 points.

Virginia Wesleyan has struggled to start this season, falling in eight of their first nine games. Like the Captains, Hurricane Florence took it's toll on the Marlins schedule, who will be playing in just their second home game of the season. The defense has allowed 2.86 goals against per game, with rookie goalkeeper Griffin Potter doing the lions share of the work between the pipes. Offensively, senior Ricky Perrault leads the way with three goals for six points, while freshman Evan Kastetter has added two goals and an assist for five points.

Following Wednesday's non-conference finale, the Captains will stay on the road for four of the next five conference games. CNU heads to Frostburg State University on Saturday for a 7:00 pm kickoff against the Bobcats to start that run.
