NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport University football team heads back into action on Saturday, traveling to Wayne, New Jersey, to take on William Paterson University. Kickoff for the New Jersey Athletic Conference game is set for 1:00 p.m. at Wightman Stadium.
The Captains are coming off a bye week and haven't seen action since October 6th, when
Art Link's squad fell to Salisbury in overtime at POMOCOÂ Stadium, 27-24. It marked the second straight overtime loss at home for the Captains, who are now 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the NJAC.
"We've had a couple of weeks to look at things and get ready for the rest of the schedule," Link said. "Obviously, it was a tough loss to Salisbury but we also staged a fantastic comeback to get back into that game. I think we've got to stay focused, keep working hard and finish strong."
William Paterson has yet to win a game in 2018, and the Pioneers are riding a 22-game losing streak dating back to 2016. WPU is 0-6 overall and 0-5 in the NJACÂ following an 0-10 season a year ago. The Pioneers have been shut out the last three weeks, dropping the three contests by a combined score of 114-0.
The game will be the fourth in the all-time series, and the Captains have won all three previous matchups. Last year at POMOCOÂ Stadium, the Captains escaped with a 27-19 triumph.
Saturday's matinee will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 12:30 p.m.
CNU returns to POMOCOÂ Stadium next Saturday, October 27, to host Kean University in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. The game will be part of Homecoming Weekend at Christopher Newport.
