ARLINGTON, Va. - Christopher Newport saw its six-game winning streak come to an end Saturday afternoon, losing to Marymount at the Verizon Sports Arena, 60-58, in Capital Athletic Conference play. CNU led by as many as 13 in the opening half and held an eight-point lead at the intermission before the Saints second half comeback. The Captains are now 10-3 overall and 4-2 in the CAC.
"We're a young team and today we made many mistakes that cost us the game," Head Coach
John Krikorian said. "I certainly don't want to take anything away from Marymount because they played a great game. We've had some games like this and we've been able to get by somehow...today we just couldn't overcome our mistakes." The Captains turned the ball over 20 times, including twice in the final minutes in critical possessions.
Christopher Newport enjoyed a 13-point lead late in the opening half, 32-19, before the Saints scored the final five points of the first half to cut the lead to eight at the break, 32-24. The Saints continued to chip away at the lead early in the second half, finally over-taking the Captains, 48-47, on a three-pointer from junior Brandon Rogers, who finished with 16 points. The Saints, who had lost six straight games as well as six straight in the series with the Captains, ended up out-scoring CNU in the second stanza, 36-26.
Sophomore
Savonte Chappell led the Captains with 11 points followed by senior
Aaron McFarland, who posted ten points and a team-high eight rebounds. McFarland, CNU's top scorer for the season, has now topped the team on the boards in each of the last three games.
Marymount sophomore Ibrahim Kamara recorded 20 points and ten rebounds to lead the Saints, who snapped a six-game losing skid. Marymount is now 4-9 overall and 3-3 in the CAC. The Captains were able to hold senior Dimitri Rucker, who had been averaging 14 points per game, to just six, all in the second half.
Christopher Newport shot 46 percent from the field for the game (22 of 48), but connected on just 11 of 25 shots in the second half. CNU held a slim advantage on the boards, 34-32.Â
CNU was without senior
Marcus Carter, and will be for the rest of the season. Carter, who had ankle surgery last summer, re-injured the ankle in CNU's season opener at Randolph-Macon. Although he had returned to the lineup, Krikorian announced prior to Saturday's game that Carter will need additional surgery and will miss the remainder of the season.
"Marcus has been battling and really suffering a lot of pain," Krikorian said. "It's certainly in his best interests to have the surgery now, take a medical redshirt, and work toward returning to the Captains next year."
CNU now trails league-leading York by two games in the conference standings. The Spartans improved to 6-0 atop the CAC and 13-0 overall, with a Saturday victory at Southern Virginia, 85-69. The Captains return to action on Wednesday, when the Captains travel to Buena Vista, Va., to take on Southern Virginia University. Tipoff time is set for 7:30 p.m.
