NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -
Christopher Newport begins a tough stretch of schedule on Saturday, as the Captains travel to Arlington, Va., to take on Marymount University. Saturday's matinee doubleheader at the Verizon Sports Arena will begin at 1:00 p.m. with the women's game followed by the men's action at approximately 3:00 p.m. The games will be the first of three straight Capital Athletic Conference tests away from the friendly confines of the Freeman Center.

The nationally-ranked CNU women's team is 11-1 overall and 5-0 in the CAC. The men are riding a six-game winning streak and are now 10-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference. Both games will be streamed live on CNUsports.com/live and the men's game will be broadcast on the CNU/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 2:40 p.m.

The first game of the twin bill will be a battle of first-place teams in the CAC as both the Captains and Saints enter play 5-0 atop the standings. Marymount is 10-2 overall following a 62-32 triumph on Wednesday at Frostburg State. Bill Broderick's Captains, ranked third in the country, are also coming off a decisive conference victory following an 86-40 verdict Wednesday at home over Penn State-Harrisburg. The Captains jumped out to a 36-2 lead in the first 14 minutes and never looked back. CNU has been powered all season by its defense, and the trend continued Wednesday at the Freeman Center. Christopher Newport, ranked in the top five nationally in steals and turnovers forced, caused fits for the Lions. On offense, senior Sam Porter tops a well-balanced scoring list at 9.1 points per game while junior Jessica Daguilh leads the squad in rebounding with 5.3 per game and senior Makenzie Fancher is averaging a team-high 2.9 assists per game.

The Saints, meanwhile, opened the season with a loss at Randolph-Macon and also fell at Catholic in a tournament on December 30th. Ashlee Rogers is in her eighth season at the helm, and the Saints are led in scoring by sophomore Regan Lohr (13.4 points per game) and rebounding by sophomore Gabriella Haddad (6.1 rebounds per contest).

In the nightcap Saturday, the Christopher Newport men's squad puts its six-game winning streak on the line against a Marymount squad that is just 3-9 this season and 2-3 in the CAC. John Krikorian's squad used a 16-2 run to finish the game Wednesday night and pull away from Penn State-Harrisburg, 73-63, at the Freeman Center. Senior Marcus Carter led the way with 17 points, all in the second half.

For the season, senior Aaron McFarland continues to top the squad in scoring, averaging 18.6 points per game. Seniors Spencer Marin (7.8) and Carter (7.0) lead the team in rebounding average. CNU leads the all-time series with Marymount, 21-2, and the Captains have won the last six in the series..

Marymount, led by ninth-year head coach Chris Rogers, is coming off a 67-60 defeat Wednesday at Frostburg State. The loss was the sixth straight for the Saints, who are led by senior Dimitri Rucker (13.9 points per game and 6.4 rebounds per contest).

Following Saturday's doubleheader, the Captains will travel to Southern Virginia next Wednesday, January 10th, and then to York College (Pa.) next Saturday, January 13th.
