Captains Use 18-Point Second Half Run to Race Past Wesley, 68-48, for Fourth Straight Victory

DOVER, Del. - Christopher Newport broke open a close game Saturday afternoon in the second half thanks to an 18-0 run, and the Captains cruised to a 68-48 triumph over Wesley College. The Captains, now 15-4 overall and 9-3 in the Capital Athletic Conference, won their fourth straight game and tenth straight over the Wolverines. CNU's defense held Wesley to just 25.5 percent shooting for the day and 20 percent shooting in the second half, as the Wolverines fell to 9-10 on the season and 5-7 in the CAC.

Sophomore Nick Parks led the way for the Captains, scoring a career-high 17 points, and making five three-pointers in nine attempts. Parks tallied nine of his points in the second half as CNU broke open a close battle. Senior Aaron McFarland scored 16, with 13 coming in the opening half. Sophomore Luther Gibbs also reached double digits, posting a dozen points, with ten in the second stanza.

"Their zone in the first half made it tough for us to get anything inside," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "We hit some big shots and took a lot from outside. I thought we really did an amazing job today...this is a tough place tl play and we stepped up and took control in the second half."

The Captains led at the intermission at Wentworth Gymnasium, 35-28, after McFarland's big first half that saw him connect on a trio of three-point shots. Wesley managed to keep the game close, and cut CNU's lead as close as two early in the second half. Christopher Newport held a 49-45 advantage with 7:53 to play when the deluge began. The Captains would then score the next 18 points over the next five minutes and 41 seconds to jump to a commanding 67-45 lead. CNU drilled three triples during the run and coasted to the eventual 20-point verdict.

For the day, the Captains sank 13 threes on 33 attempts. Parks, who made five of nine from beyond the arc, led with five threes followed by McFarland and freshman Jason Aigner with three each.

Junior Evan Anderson led Wesley with 17 points and sophomore Brian Cameron, the CAC's leading scorer this season, was held to 16. Cameron had been averaging almost 22 points per game. The Wolverines made just 14 of 55 shots for the day and just five of 25 after halftime.

The Captains out-rebounded Wesley, 44-36, with Gibbs leading the Captains with eight boards to go with his 12 points, five assists and two blocks. McFarland, who is now tied with Matt Bryant for tenth place on CNU's all-time scoring list with 1,359 points, also contributed seven rebounds.

Christopher Newport now holds an 18-4 lead in the all-time series with Wesley.  CNU travels to Salisbury, Maryland, for a key Wednesday night matchup with the Sea Gulls of Salisbury. Both teams are tied for second place in the CAC standings at 9-3, a game behind York. York was victorious on Saturday at home over Marymount while Salisbury lost at home to Mary Washington. Tipoff time is set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Maggs Center.
