Basketball Squads Travel to Dover for Doubleheader Saturday at Wesley College

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Capital Athletic Conference season rolls on as the Captains of Christopher Newport hit the road again for a Saturday twin bill at Wesley College in Dover, Delaware. The women's game will begin at 1:00 p.m. followed by the men's action at approximately 3:00 p.m.

Both CNU squads defeated Wesley at the Freeman Center back on December 10th, with the women posting a 74-40 victory and the men racing to an 83-69 triumph. Both teams are coming off wins on Wednesday night at the Freeman Center over St. Mary's College of Maryland. Bill Broderick's women's team registered a 64-43 victory while John Krikorian's men's squad out-lasted the Seahawks by a 64-50 margin.

Heading into play on Saturday, the Christopher Newport women have a 16-2 overall record and a 10-1 mark in the Capital Athletic Conference. The Captains remain a game behind Marymount in the league standings. The men are now 14-4 overall and 8-3 in the CAC, a game back of York and Salisbury in the conference standings.

In the women's victory on Wednesday night, sophomore Micah Maloney scored a team-high 15 points and hauled in a career-high 10 rebounds for her first career double-double, leading the way for the 10th-ranked Captains. CNU was dominant on the glass, falling just one rebound shy of the facility record with 64 rebounds, and winning the battle of the boards by a season-high 28 rebounds.  The Captains have now won five straight and the victory was also the 12th straight at home, marking the fifth longest win streak since the Freeman Center opened in 2000-01.

In the men's win on Wednesday, senior Aaron McFarland, wearing goggles due to an eye injury, wasn't hampered and led the way with a 20-point performance. McFarland, who moved into 12th place on CNU's all-time scoring list, knocked down six of 11 shots and tallied 13 of his points in the second half as the Captains out-scored the Seahawks, 38-25. Freshman Jason Aigner sank three three-pointers and scored 11 points for the Captains. Fellow freshman Adrian Beasley was also in double digits with ten, six coming in the second half. Sophomore Luther Gibbs scored two points, but posted eight rebounds, seven assists, two blocks and a steal.

The Wesley women's squad has a record now of 4-14 overall and 2-9 in the CAC. The Wolverines had lost six straight games before snapping the losing skid on Wednesday night with a 72-67 overtime triumph over Penn State-Harrisburg. The Wesley men's squad is 9-9 overall and 5-6 in the CAC, and also posted a win over Penn State-Harrisburg on Wednesday, 82-70. The Wolverines feature the top scorer in the CAC, sophomore Brian Cameron, who is averaging 21.9 points per game. Cameron is also the top three-point shooter in the league at 51.7 percent from beyond the arc.

Both games Saturday will be streamed live on CNUsports.com/live. The men's game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at approximately 2:40 p.m.
