Captains Win in Double Overtime Against York (Pa.) in Capital Athletic Conference Opener

Box Score in HTML Format

YORK, Pa. -- The Christopher Newport men's soccer team escaped with a 3-2 double overtime victory on Saturday night, slipping past York College of Pennsylvania on the road in the Capital Athletic Conference opener. The Captains (5-2-0, 1-0-0) got the gamewinner off a free kick in the 106th minute when Daniel Zeitoun found the head of rookie Davis Pillow for the score.

With the setback, York (Pa.) drops to 2-5-1 overall and 0-1-0 in league action. The team's played a hard-fought battle in front of a large crowd on a beautiful, warm evening at Graham Field.

CNU took the lead first, scoring on a penalty kick goal in the 20th minute. Senior Andrew Gogolin stepped up to the spot to deliver the goal for a 1-0 lead. The Spartans would even the score in the 32nd minute, however, when Nathan Bilbie found Zion Friday in the box for the equalizer.

An exciting spurt in the middle of the second half saw York take a brief lead on an unassisted score by Jordan Evans, but the Captains even the game back up less than a minute later. After the Spartans took a 2-1 lead, Christopher Newport added another penalty kick goal, this time from Jimmy Grace, to tie the game. Grace now has seven goals on the season and leads the league in scoring.

After regulation ended with a 2-2 tie, the Captains would deliver the knockout blow in the 106th minute.  A foul set CNU up with a restart on the right side of the field, where Zeitoun would deliver a picture-perfect cross to the back post where Pillow elevated and hammered home the header into the back of the net.

CNU outshot the Spartans by a final tally of 21-12, including an 11-4 advantage in shots on-goal.

The Captains will return on September 27 as they travel to Randolph College for the non-conference finale. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 pm
