NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport volleyball team will kick off the 2017 campaign on Friday with the start of the two-day Captains Classic, which will feature a pair of tri-matches against Meredith and Neumann at the Freeman Center.

The Captains will start the weekend with a 4 p.m. match against Neumann on Friday before returning to the court for an 8 p.m. showdown with Meredith. On Saturday, CNU will open up with Neumann at 11 a.m. before squaring off with Meredith in the finale at 3 p.m.

In addition to Christopher Newport's four matches, Meredith and Neumann will play each other at 6 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The Captains are coming off of a 2016 campaign in which they advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 10th straight year. Along the way, the team compiled a 25-10 record, including a 7-2 mark in the Capital Athletic Conference. Especially dangerous at home, CNU posted a 16-3 record at the Freeman Center highlighted by a pristine 4-0 mark during last year's Captains Classic.

Riley Garrison ranked second in the CAC with a .312 hitting percentage as a true freshman in 2016. Meanwhile,
Hope Webb averaged a team-best 8.89 assists per set, andÂ
Katie Piper boasted a 2.16 kills-per-frame rate.

On the other side of the court, Meredith also reached the NCAA Tournament last year after putting together a 25-4 record while capturing the USA South Conference Championship. The Avenging Angels welcome back a solid group of veterans from last year's squad, including Caroline Corey, who unloaded 317 kills. Hannah Blaylock also averaged a team-high 10.14 assists per set while collecting 164 digs as well.

Rounding out the field, Neumann registered an 18-18 record in 2016. The Knights advanced to the semifinals of the CSAC Tournament and earned a bid to the ECAC Region 2 Playoffs. The team welcomes back standout junior Rachael Hoffman, who ripped 316 kills last year while adding 112 blocks. Rachel Cray also notched an 8.21 assists-per-set rate and hammered a team-high 59 aces as well.

Former USA South foes, Meredith and CNU have met 23 times with the Captains holding a 22-1 advantage in the series. Meanwhile, Neumann will be battling Christopher Newport for the first time in program history.
