NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
The Christopher Newport volleyball team will kick off the 2017 campaign on Friday with the start of the two-day Captains Classic, which will feature a pair of tri-matches against Meredith and Neumann at the Freeman Center.

The Captains will start the weekend with a 4 p.m. match against Neumann on Friday before returning to the court for an 8 p.m. showdown with Meredith. On Saturday, CNU will open up with Neumann at 11 a.m. before squaring off with Meredith in the finale at 3 p.m.

In addition to Christopher Newport's four matches, Meredith and Neumann will play each other at 6 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.

For those fans unable to make it to the Freeman Center, a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com/live. Live stats will also be available for the final three CNU matches this weekend. Direct links can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.

The Captains are coming off of a 2016 campaign in which they advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 10th straight year. Along the way, the team compiled a 25-10 record, including a 7-2 mark in the Capital Athletic Conference. Especially dangerous at home, CNU posted a 16-3 record at the Freeman Center highlighted by a pristine 4-0 mark during last year's Captains Classic.

Returning from last season's team, All-Conference middle blocker Riley Garrison ranked second in the CAC with a .312 hitting percentage as a true freshman in 2016. Meanwhile, Hope Webb averaged a team-best 8.89 assists per set, and Katie Piper boasted a 2.16 kills-per-frame rate.

On the other side of the court, Meredith also reached the NCAA Tournament last year after putting together a 25-4 record while capturing the USA South Conference Championship. The Avenging Angels welcome back a solid group of veterans from last year's squad, including Caroline Corey, who unloaded 317 kills. Hannah Blaylock also averaged a team-high 10.14 assists per set while collecting 164 digs as well.

Rounding out the field, Neumann registered an 18-18 record in 2016. The Knights advanced to the semifinals of the CSAC Tournament and earned a bid to the ECAC Region 2 Playoffs. The team welcomes back standout junior Rachael Hoffman, who ripped 316 kills last year while adding 112 blocks. Rachel Cray also notched an 8.21 assists-per-set rate and hammered a team-high 59 aces as well.

Former USA South foes, Meredith and CNU have met 23 times with the Captains holding a 22-1 advantage in the series. Meanwhile, Neumann will be battling Christopher Newport for the first time in program history.
