DOVER, Del. -- Showing off its well-balanced attack, the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team saw 13 different players score a goal, including six with multiple strikes, as the Captains cruised past Wesley, 19-2, during a Capital Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon at Miller Stadium.
Leading the volume scorers,
Colleen Bourgal had two goals and a pair of assists.
Samantha Wettengel,
Sarah Culver, and
Katie Orrison chipped in with three points as well, while
Catie Chess led the squad with five points, including four helpers. Meanwhile, on the other side,
Mariah Ginebra helped clamp down on the Wolverines with two caused turnovers, and
Katie Gaskin cleaned the field with a team-high three ground balls.
With the victory, Christopher Newport improves to 10-5 on the season, including 4-2 in league action. The setback drops Wesley to 5-8 with an 0-6 mark in CAC play.
Making her presence felt immediately,
Jordan Hayes kicked off the game by securing the opening draw before capitalizing 20 seconds later with a free-position strike. That goal served as a call to arms for the Captains as the visitors broke free with a breathtaking onslaught during a seven-minute showcase.
During the early assault, Christopher Newport controlled the game's first eight draws while tossing seven goals on the board. Refusing to let the Wolverines anywhere near the ball, CNU dominated possession and stretched its lead. Headlining the attack, Chess and Wettengel both contributed a goal and an assist during the quick-strike affair, while Bourgal, Culver,
Caitlin King, and
Carly Wilson all found the back of the net as well on the way to a 7-0 edge.
Following the offensive eruption, the defense saw some action and quickly blanketed the Wesley attack. On two straight rallies, Ginebra crashed down on the opposition and forced turnovers before a shot could be taken. Later,
Erin Callahan caused a miscue of her own and jumped on the ground ball before
Madison Chestnut capitalized on the other end with the squad's eighth goal off a feed from Chess.
Although Wesley won the ensuing draw, the hosts quickly turned it over and Gaskin grabbed the roller to kick off a second wave by the Christopher Newport attack. Culver and Bourgal both chipped in with their second strikes of the game during the middle of the opening stanza. During the surge, Wesley eventually whistled for a timeout and later benefited from the break on the way to the squad's first goal before CNU retaliated again.
First, on the defensive side,
Kaysie Morningstar and
Julia Golden broke up runs by the Wesley attack, while
Bailey Lien swallowed a shot between the pipes. Meanwhile, Callahan laced an eight-meter dart before
Meghan O'Reilly slammed home a shot of her own to close out the first half with a 12-1 advantage.
With a healthy lead and a running clock, the Captains turned to their young guns to close out the contest in the second half. Orrison got the final period rolling with a goal before lending a hand on a bullet by Chestnut. Later, fellow first-year member
Olivia Aumais added back-to-back tallies to push the advantage to 16-1 midway through the second half.
In complete control of the contest, Christopher Newport eased into the victory. Wettengel and Orrison both contributed their second goals late in the period before
Taryn Hannam-Zatz added the final nail with two minutes remaining to lock up the 19-2 triumph.
Overall, CNU held a 34-6 advantage in shots and a 19-12 lead in ground balls. Along with Gaskin's three rollers, Culver, Aumais, and Ginebra all picked up two apiece. Meanwhile, the Captains also controlled 17 of the game's 20 draws, including five by Hayes and four by Chess.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday when the squad travels to St. Mary's (Md.) for a 4 p.m. showdown.
