NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
Logan Harrelson provided five solid innings on the hill, and the Christopher Newport offense smacked 16 hits on Sunday afternoon, cruising to a 14-1 win over Gallaudet University (4-5). The Captains allowed only four hits to the Bison while improving to 9-8 on the season.Â
The Captains' redshirt sophomore starter dazzled against Gallaudet, in the finest performance of his young career. Harrelson struck out six batters in 5.0 innings of work, earning his first career win. After a walk to lead off the game, he retired 10 straight batters before giving up a lazy single down the right field line. He promptly struck out the next batter and the Captains caught the baserunner stealing to end the fourth inning.Â
Through the first 4.1 innings of work, Harrelson faced only one batter over the minimum while striking out five. Gallaudet would scratch across one run against Harrelson in the fifth inning, taking advantage of a pair of CNU errors. He finished the day with a line of 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, and 6 K.Â
On the other side of the field, the Captains offense opened up the game early on against Gallaudet, scoring in each of the first four innings to build a 10-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, sophomore
Jordan Mason led off with a double, and
Keith Roberts singled to third base to put the first two batters on. Two batters later,
Brandon Ginch continued his hot week with an RBI single deep in the hole at shortstop. The run scoring was wrapped up when
A.J. Nicely delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Ginch later in the inning.Â
In the second inning,
Austin Henry would score on a stolen base and an error, and CNU tacked on another in the third when
J.T. Bellotti lofted a shot to center field to chase home
Nicholas Baham with a sacrifice fly. The Captains took a double-digit lead with five runs in the bottom of the fourth, kicked off by the first four batters reaching base.
Craig Johnson slammed a double into the right field corner and Bellotti added his second sac fly of the day to cap the big inning.Â
In the seventh inning, the Captains reserves started to add to the lead. Senior
Josh Moore got on by way of a one-out single into right field, and moved up to second via a wild pitch. Two batters later, sophomore
Eliott Sledd delivered an RBI double to score Moore, regaining a 10-run lead at 11-1. In the 8th,
John Anderson and
Nick DiNapoli led off with back-to-back singles, followed by a walk from
George Watkins to load the bases. Gallaudet nearly escaped with a double play, but Moore stepped in and crushed a 2-1 pitch over the right field wall for a 3-run homer, his first of the year.Â
After Harrelson wrapped up his day in the fifth, the CNU bullpen saw five more pitchers come in and work efficiently through the Gallaudet lineup.
Brian Owens struck out a pair in a clean sixth inning, and rookie
Teddy Herbert made his collegiate debut with only four batters faced in the seventh.
Corey Williams,
Taylor D'Agostino, and
Kyle Darmstead each recorded two outs in the final two innings to close out the big win at home. In all, the CNU pitching staff allowed just four hits, all singles, while striking out 11.Â
Christopher Newport is back in action on Tuesday, March 7, as they host Virginia Wesleyan College at 2:00 pm.Â
