CNU Baseball Looks to Continue Hot Streak With Home Doubleheader Saturday Versus York (Pa.)

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The CNU baseball team will put the nation's second longest active win streak on the line Saturday, as the Captains host York College of Pennsylvania in Capital Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader in Newport News. The Captains (20-9, 10-0) are riding an 11-game win streak, second only to Centenary College's 16-game roll, and will take on a Spartans team that has just one loss in conference play so far this season. Live stats and a live video stream will be available at first pitch of the doubleheader, beginning at Noon.

Christopher Newport holds the top spot in the league standings, while Salisbury trails by just one game with a 9-1 overall record. York sits in third, also with just one loss, paired with six wins during league play this spring. The Spartans come into the Saturday twin bill with an 11-5 overall record as winners of three of their last four games.

The Captains have been on a roll for three weeks, winning 11 straight games to garner national attention with the fourth longest win streak in program history. The pitching staff has been incredible during the roll, lowering the team's ERA to 3.13, ranking 20th in the nation. Leading the charge has been senior Michael Thomas (5-1, 1.94 ERA), rookie Thomas Packert (4-0, 2.25 ERA), and sophomore Logan Harrelson (4-3, 3.79 ERA) in the rotation. The three starters have combined to toss 72.1 of a possible 100 innings during the win streak, boasting a combined 2.36 ERA with 70 strikeouts.

After the starting arms, the Captains' bullpen has also been stellar, led by senior right-hander Caleb Myers (13 app, 1.69 ERA) and junior southpaw Joe Burris (2-0, 0.50 ERA, 3 SV). Myers is coming off a sensational appearance on Wednesday at Mary Washington, striking out five of the six batters he faced to lock down the final two innings in a 9-5 win. Burris has appeared in a team-high 14 games and ranks fifth nationally in total appearances this season.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Captains' are hitting .302 as a team with five regulars hitting .307 or better. Senior outfielder A.J. Nicely has registered five straight multi-hit performances, raising his average to a team-best .396 on the season, while setting a new career-high in hits for a season. Senior Keith Roberts picked up his first home run of the season to put the Captains' on top of Mary Washington on Wednesday, and helps lead a powerful CNU attack that ranks third nationally in total home runs.

York comes into Saturday's matchup led by a pair of the league's top pitchers in Elliot Mortimer and Joel Kenney, but Kenney likely won't appear against the Captains as he tossed in the Spartans win on Thursday. Kenney ranks fourth in the CAC with a 2.21 ERA and has 21 strikeouts in 20.1 innings of work. Mortimer is 2-0 and sports a league-leading 0.81 ERA with a complete game shutout under his belt this season.

Offensively, the Spartans are among the league's top offenses, hitting .304 as a team. York is led by Grant Oberholtzer hitting .393 with 14 RBI and 11 runs scored, while adding a 6-for-6 mark. Junior Christian Bilan is adding a .373 mark with 12 RBI and 10 runs scored.

Fans attending Saturday's doubleheader should be advised that parking will be at a premium. Along with baseball, Christopher Newport will be hosting a women's lacrosse match, softball doubleheader, as well as three tennis matches. Meanwhile, a high school track meet will be taking place at POMOCO Stadium, and the soccer teams will be holding their annual alumni games and spring showcase as well.
