20th-Ranked Captains Sweep Wesley to Open Capital Athletic Conference Play

DOVER, De. - Christopher Newport took both games of a Saturday doubleheader at Wesley College, with the 20th-ranked Captains winning the opener, 6-3, and taking the nightcap by a 7-2 margin. The games marked the first Capital Athletic Conference action of the season for both squads.

Junior outfielder Leah Andrews led the CNU attack at the plate by going five-for-nine in the doubleheader, including two triples and the only home run of the day. Andrews also drove in three runs and scored four times.

The Captains, who scored only eight runs in four games last week, came alive at the plate Saturday by posting 13 runs on 23 hits off Wolverine pitching. Wesley is now 10-8 overall.

CNU never trailed in the conference-opening twin bill, jumping to 6-0 leads in each game. Starting pitchers Aubrey Bates and Maiven McKnight benefited from the run production. Bates, a freshman, allowed one run in three-and-a-third innings of work in the opener to improve to 6-2 on the season. McKnight, a senior who shut out Roanoke on Sunday, threw six innings in the nightcap, yielding two runs on five hits. She is now 5-0 for the year.

The twin bill started a busy stretch for the Captains, who will play three doubleheaders in a four-day span. Keith Parr's team is now 14-6 overall, and will host Penn State-Behrend in non-conference play Sunday at Captains Park. The doubleheader will begin at 1:00 p.m.
