Geise Continues Historic Run, Sets Career Points Record as CNU Men’s Lacrosse Beats Marymount, 17-3

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Setting fire to the program's all-time record book, Will Geise continued his historic assault on Saturday as he established a new career points record while helping the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team run past Marymount, 17-3, during a Capital Athletic Conference battle on a sun-splashed afternoon at Captains Turf Field.

Just three days after establishing a new goals record, Geise took down the points mark as well after scoring four times against the Saints. With that performance, he bumped his career total to 146 points, topping John Thompson's previous mark of 144 set from 2012-15. In a seven-day stretch, the senior has broken the program's top-two offensive career records and tied the single-game points mark with a masterful nine-point outburst against Messiah last week.

While Geise was scattering his name throughout the history books, Ryan Mills also contributed four points against Marymount and became the ninth Captain to eclipse the 100-point plateau. Matthew Crist also contributed six points, including four assists, and Shane McKenna added four goals as well.

On the defensive side, Will Cogan was a beast. The sophomore blanketed the field and swarmed the Saints with an unrelenting assault. He eventually forced seven turnovers, marking the second-highest single-game total in program history. Matt Hayden also made eight saves to smother Marymount on the way to the win.

With the victory, Christopher Newport improves to 6-2 on the season, including 1-0 in the CAC. The setback drops Marymount to 2-7 with an 0-2 mark in league action.

At the start of the game, the Captains showed patience on the attack and slowly picked apart the opposition. After working the ball around the zone with methodical precision for nearly three minutes, Crist connected with Drew Magnusson, who lit up the scoreboard with the game's first goal.

After patience resulted in the first strike, speed stretched the lead. Following a save by Hayden on the defensive side, the Captains bolted down the field on the clear before Geise sniped his first tally off a feed from Crist. Moments later, Conor James forced a turnover before Drew Cornell grabbed the roller and jump-started another jailbreak.

Flying down the field, Mills took possession before dishing back to James, who trailed the play perfectly. Fittingly, after forcing the turnover to start the series, he also capitalized on the offensive end after lining a screamer to the back of the net for a quick 3-0 lead.

Following Marymount's first score, Geise and Cogan began their historic runs. First, on the offensive side, Geise converted on a crisp pass from Magnusson to tie Thompson's points record. Later, Cogan jumped a passing lane and forced his first turnover before grabbing an errant pass to steal his second just moments later.

Meanwhile, on the other side, Geise came through with the record-breaker. After he worked hard for his first 144 career points, it seemed only fitting that he caught a break on his historic tally. With four minutes left in the period, the Saints' goalie grabbed a loose ball well behind the crease and sailed a pass over the head of a defenseman while trying to set up a clear. In perfect position, Geise plucked the ball out of the air and had an open net to break the points record with his third goal of the game.

Although the Saints added their second goal towards the end of the first quarter, the Captains responded with another onslaught early in the second stanza. McKenna stretched the lead back to four after capitalizing on a pass from Magnusson before Nate Cho used a little geometry to add the team's seventh strike. After gaining possession, he fired a shot into the turf well in front of the goal, but the ball bounced perfectly over the MU goalie and under the crossbar to secure a 7-2 edge.

Continuing the assault, Foster forced one of his three turnovers before benefiting on the other side of the field. Facing two defenders, the All-American rolled around both before snapping off a long-range rocket to earn an 8-2 edge.

Once again, the visitors managed to add a goal right before the end of the quarter, but CNU fired back with a fresh 15 on the clock. In the third period, the defense stepped up first before the offense took over. Hayden made a spectacular save after trying to track down a ground ball. Although the Saints won the sprint for the roller, Hayden managed to run around the pipe, get back into the crease, and stone a shot to keep Marymount off the board.

Later, Cornell deflected another MU attempt before Cogan brought the hammer down on a different attacker to strip the ball and flip the field.

With the defense doing its job, the offense came back for more. Geise struck on the run for his fourth goal before Spencer Shipman added another bouncer that popped into the net on the way to a 10-3 lead. Minutes later, the defense set up a strike as Trevor Royce forced a turnover before Cornell cleared the ball.

Storming into the offensive zone, Cornell eventually dished over to James before the fellow long-pole deferred to the attackers. In a flash, Crist set up Mills, who unloaded a dart from the far side to push the lead to eight at 11-3.

Later, Mills returned the favor on a goal by Crist before McKenna rolled back around a Saint for his second strike of the contest and a 13-3 lead entering the fourth quarter.

With more than enough cushion, Christopher Newport eased into the victory. Kicking off the final frame, Cornell dropped a midfielder to prevent a clear before Crist and McKenna came through with back-to-back goals. Later, Cogan added the final punctuation mark to his afternoon after swatting down a pass deep inside MU's offensive zone to end a late Marymount threat.

Following the turnover, the Captains took advantage of a two-minute, non-releasable penalty as Foster and McKenna burned the Saints with a pair of man-up strikes to close out the 17-3 win.

Overall, Christopher Newport held a 49-24 advantage in shots and a 41-21 lead in ground balls. The Captains also won 16 of the game's 24 faceoffs, including a 15-for-22 effort by Tony Cruz.

CNU will return to action on Wednesday when the team caps off its six-game homestand with a 4 p.m. showdown against Southern Virginia.
