CNU Baseball Welcomes Frostburg State for CAC Doubleheader Saturday at Noon

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport baseball team will look to stay unbeaten in Capital Athletic Conference action this weekend, as the Captains (13-9, 4-0) welcome in Frostburg State University for a doubleheader on Saturday, with first pitch set for Noon. The Bobcats (8-5, 1-1) will attempt to disrupt the Captains four-game winning streak, in which CNU has outscored opponents 33-3.

Weather conditions could prompt a change to the weekend's schedule, but as of Friday evening, the doubleheader is still set for a Noon start on Saturday. Stay tuned to CNUsports.com and follow @CNUathletics on Twitter for updates as they are made available. The winter storm caused a postponement on Frostburg State's schedule Friday, as the Bobcats were scheduled to play Southern Virginia University but were unable to take the field.

Christopher Newport is coming off the team's second shutout in CAC action in four games this season. The pitching staff has been exceptional during the Captains' four-game winning streak, highlighted by the impressive starting staff. Sophomore Thomas Packert (4-0) won two of the four games, while leading the way in a pair of shutouts. In his first eight appearances in a CNU uniform, Packert has posted seven scoreless efforts, including a 14.1 inning scoreless streak after Thursday's win against Mary Washington.

Senior Michael Thomas (3-1) has also helped buoy the rotation, ranking third in the conference in ERA with a 1.29 mark. Sophomore Logan Harrelson (2-3) rounds out the bulk of the CNU starting group, and all three Captains rank in the top six in the league in strikeouts.

Offensively, the Captains have exploded behind a balanced attack, seeing the team average grow to .301. Junior Craig Johnson is hitting .362 and sophomore Nicholas Baham is at .361 to lead the way. The duo have combined for 9 HR, 42 runs, and 37 RBI. Seven different Captains have driven in at least 12 runs this season.

Frostburg State has won three of four, while also holding a lead in a suspended game against York (Pa.) in that stretch. The Bobcats have been led by an offense that is hitting .286 as a team, with two players hitting well over .400 thirteen games into the schedule. J.T. Tipton is hitting .481, ranking second in the CAC, and Matt Jeffery ranks third, with a .440 mark.

Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com/live. Following Saturday's twin bill against the Bobcats, CNU will return to action on Monday, March 20 as the team takes the road to face N.C. Wesleyan College in non-conference play.
