Captains Post Fourth Straight Victory, Two-Hitting Mary Washington in 7-0 CAC Shutout

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport got a combination of good hitting and pitching Thursday afternoon, recording a 7-0 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Mary Washington at sun-drenched and chilly Captains Park. The triumph was the fourth straight for the Captains, and CNU improved to 4-0 in CAC action.

Sophomore righthander Thomas Packert threw seven brilliant innings, and earned the victory to raise his record to 4-0. Packert allowed just two singles and struck out seven as the Captains upped their overall mark to 13-9 on the season. Senior Caleb Myers and junior Joe Burris finished up on the mound for CNU, each throwing a scoreless inning to complete the two-hit shutout.

Packert, who threw 93 pitches over seven frames, gave up just one walk and faced just 25 batters.

CNU broke a scoreless tie with a single run in the fourth, which proved to be all they would need for the day. The Captains added four more in the fifth and then plated single runs in the sixth and eighth innings to cap the 7-0 verdict. Eagles starter Nick McIntyre gave up six of the seven runs over the first five and a third innings to take the loss and fall to 2-2 for the year.

The Captains used a 13-hit barrage, including 11 singles, to account for their seven scores. Junior catcher Brandon Walker's fourth inning single, one of two hits on the day, drove home CNU's first run. Sophomore second baseman J.T. Bellotti recorded two hits, a single and triple, and drove home two runs. Senior third baseman Keith Roberts posted a single and a double and knocked in two, while senior leftfielder A.J. Nicely registered two RBI's with a fifth inning single.

Mary Washington fell to 9-6 with the loss, and the Eagles are now 2-2 in conference play.

The Captains will look to continue their winning ways on Saturday when Frostburg State comes to town. CNU will host the Bobcats in a CAC doubleheader beginning at 12:00 noon at Captains Park.
