ARLINGTON, Va. -- The first conference doubleheader of the season for Christopher Newport and Marymount will have to wait at least a day, as head coach
John Harvell announced on Friday that Saturday's twin bill has been tentatively moved to Sunday afternoon. By moving the games back, the Captains (10-9, 1-0) are hoping to avoid poor weather impacting the Northern Virginia area this weekend, and expect a first pitch of game one on Sunday at Noon.
Marymount University (6-7, 0-0) already announced a change in venue for the contests, as CNU will take on the Saints at Bishop O'Connell High School. Marymount is returning from a spring trip to Florida, where the Saints went 3-3 including a win over nationally-ranked Otterbein. The Captains just wrapped up a six-game homestand with a win over Southern Virginia University on Wednesday, opening conference play with a 20-0 shutout over the Knights. It was also CNU's 15th home game in the last 16 games on the schedule.Â
The Captains matched the program record for home runs hit in a game during the rout of Southern Virginia, popping six round-trippers from six different players. Sophomore
Nicholas Baham continued the impressive start to his sophomore season, hitting his team-leading sixth home run, while the first baseman also tops the list in RBI (21) and runs scored (23). Also seeing the ball well this season is junior right fielder
Craig Johnson, hitting a team-best .435, leading the way as the Captains hit .301 as a team.Â
On the mound, CNU senior
Michael Thomas (2-1, 1.33 ERA) and sophomore
Thomas Packert (3-0, 0.96 ERA) are the top starters so far. Thomas was a hard-luck loser in his last appearance, tossing eight innings with just two earned runs allowed, while striking out eight against nationally-ranked Oswego State. In four starts this season, opponents are hitting just .192 against the lefty, while Thomas has struck out 26 batters in 27.0 innings of work. Packert was the winning pitcher against Southern Virginia on Wednesday, after allowing just one hit in five innings of shutout ball. He lowered his already sturdy ERA to under 1.00 and opponents are hitting a measly .093 against him.Â
In the bullpen, senior right-handed reliever
Caleb Myers has made 57 career appearances, which ranks him sixth all-time at CNU and tied for fourth in Capital Athletic Conference history. He is ten games shy of tying the league record for career appearances, set by Wesley's Andrew Cooper in 2014. Junior
Joe Burris has been stellar in a team-high nine appearances this season, boasting a 0.71 ERA with 16 strikeouts in 12.2 innings of work.Â
Marymount is opening CAC action against the Captains this weekend after opening the year with a 6-7 start. The Saints posted the program's first ever 20-win season last year, in just the third year of existence. This season, the senior class is leading the offense in the first portion of the schedule. Lorenzo Calrderon and Roy Coates are each hitting .400 with 15 RBI and 19 runs scored combined, while Brandon Orbe is adding a .294 clip. Sophomore Luke Tyree is also playing well, hitting .361 with six extra-base hits, including one of only two home runs hit by the Saints this season.Â
On the mound, senior Spenser Davis (0-0, 4.76 ERA) and junior Collin Bazemore (2-0, 4.80 ERA) have been the top options for head coach Frank Leone. Bazemore has struck out 16 batters in 15.0 innings of work, while Davis has added 12 K's in 11.1 IP.Â
