ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The third-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport jumped to an early 11-0 lead Saturday and never looked back en route to a dominant 88-61 triumph at St. Mary's College's O'Brien Athletic and Recreation Arena.
Senior
Tim Daly led the way by recording a career-high 28 points on 12 of 13 shooting and also gathered 11 rebounds. Daly's third double-double of the season helped the Captains win their 13th straight game, maintaining a one-game lead in the Capital Athletic Conference standings.
"We played with confidence and great energy," Head Coach
John Krikorian said. "Tim got it going and when he plays at that level he's hard to stop. We had a lot of guys step up and it all added up to a good road win."
Christopher Newport is now 19-2 overall and 13-1 in CAC play with four games remaining in the regular season.
After St. Mary's cut the lead to six, 26-20, CNU ended the first half on a 22-2 run to lead at the intermission, 48-22. The Captains then extended the advantage to as many as 39 in the second stanza, 64-25, amounting to a 38-5 run.
Daly, who surpassed a previous career high of 25 points, scored 14 in each half, and was joined in double figures by junior
Marcus Carter, who added 12 points. Freshman
Nick Parks came off the bench to score nine points, and senior
Kevin Regimbal tallied eight for the day.
The Captains made 33 of 59 shots for the day for 56 percent shooting. CNU dressed 14 players for the game, and 11 got into the scoring column. The senior quartet of Daly, Regimbal,
Rayshard Brown, and
Justin Hampton combined to make 18 of 23 shots in the road victory.
CNU's defense, second in the country in opponent field goal percentage, held the Seahawks to just 17 of 52 for the day (32.7 percent).
CNU out-rebounded St. Mary's, 48-25, as the Seahawks fell to 10-11 overall and 5-9 in the CAC. Freshman Matt Ayoub led the Seahawks wirh 18 points.
The Captains have now won six straight over St. Mary's, and defeated the Seahawks at the Freeman Center on January 11th, 68-60.
Elsewhere Saturday, Salisbury held off York, 77-72, to remain a game back of the Captains at 12-2 in the CAC.
Christopher Newport hosts its final two regular-season games at the Freeman Center this week. CNU plays Wednesday night against Marymount with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. and then Wesley comes to town Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. start.
