NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport baseball team will start another busy week on the diamond with a road trip on Tuesday, traveling to face Hampden-Sydney College at 3:00 pm. The Captains (6-6) will then return home for a game against Eastern Mennonite University on Wednesday, March 1, with first pitch slated for 2:00 pm.
The two games against Old Dominion Athletic Conference competition are the first two of five games played this week, including four more at Captains Park. CNU will host Oswego State for a doubleheader on Saturday, followed by a Sunday matinee against Gallaudet.
The Captains are coming off a week in which they defeated the No. 1 team in the nation, 5-3, and picked up wins over Susquehanna and Elmira to improve to 6-6 on the season. CNU wrapped up a nine-game home stand and, following Tuesday's road trip, will open up another eight-game home stand starting with the game against Eastern Mennonite.
Christopher Newport has been led by the middle-of-the-lineup duo of senior
Keith Roberts and
Nicholas Baham. Baham has delivered 18 RBI with nine extra-base hits, including five home runs, in a red-hot start at the plate for the sophomore first baseman. Roberts has continued to get on base at an exceptional pace, earning seven walks and six hit-by-pitches to go with 12 hits in the first 12 games, for a .446 on-base percentage.
CNU and Hampden-Sydney matched up during that nine-game stretch, with the Tigers capturing a 7-5 win over the Captains. H-SC is 6-1 to start, with an offense rolling to the tune of double figure scoring in three of their first seven games. The Tigers have been at home in all but the one game in Newport News, and are coming off a 15-12 win over Stevenson on Sunday. The team is hitting .368 with Tyler Blevins leading the wayy with 12 hits through the first seven games.
On Wednesday, the Royals of Eastern Mennonite University will carry a 5-2 record into Captains Park. After opening with seven straight at home, EMU hits the road for the first time in 2017 to face the Captains, kicking off a run of nine straight games away from Harrisonburg. The Royals are coming off a sweep of CNU's fellow Capital Athletic Conference team from Penn State Harrisburg. Eastern Mennonite won 12-6 in the first game, and then pulled out a 16-15 win over the Lions in game two. A veteran team, the Royals are led by three seniors hitting right around .500 in Griffin Stanley, Joe Hall, and Kyle Matthews.
