NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Both starting pitchers impressed through seven innings of work on Sunday afternoon, as Susquehanna (1-2) did enough to get by Christopher Newport, 4-0. The Captains fall to 6-6 on the season with the setback.

Logan Harrelson (0-3) picked up the start for CNU, putting together the finest start of his career. The sophomore registered eight strikeouts and scattered just five hits over seven innings of work. He allowed just two runs, on a pair of sacrifice flies, and wound up the hard-luck loser after a quality start.

On the other side, the River Hawks' rookie starter, Bobby Grigas (1-0), dazzled in his collegiate debut. He allowed just four hits in his seven innings of work, while striking out 12. He worked around seven walks, including two intentional.

Christopher Newport threatened to get on the board first in the third inning, when Austin Henry led off with a base-hit bunt. After Grigas worked two quick outs, the inning continued on an infield single by Keith Roberts, as Henry moved up to third base. Both runners were stranded, however, when Grigas worked an inning-ending strikeout.

In the next half ining, Susquehanna led off with back-to-back walks, and Nick Berger loaded the bases with a one-out single. Justin Miller drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to left field, but Harrelson worked out of the jam by striking out the next batter to end the inning.

In the top of the sixth, Cole Luzins led off with a double and trotted home after a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly from the next two batters. Taylor Luckenbill delivered the RBI with a lofted shot to deep right field, and the River Hawks had a 2-0 lead. The rest of the offense came in the top of the 8th when Susquehanna put together a two-out rally against reliever Logan Aylor. Danny Gordon doubled down the line and Luckenbill drove him in with a single through the right side. Berger followed with a double to score another, but was thrown out at third on a nice relay from Joseph Cutchins.

CNU put two runners on in the ninth inning, looking to mount a potential rally, but SU reliever Liam Conboy escaped unscathed to hold onto the shutout for the River Hawks.

Keith Roberts led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance, adding a walk and a hit-by-pitch, reaching base four times. Thomas Packert also appeared in relief for CNU, continuing his impressive streak to start the year with a perfect 1-2-3 ninth inning.

The Captains closed a nine-game homestand with the loss, and will return to action on Tuesday, February 28, as they travel to Hampden-Sydney College for a 3:00 pm first pitch.
