HAVERFORD, Pa. -- Sarah Culver one-upped herself with a seven-goal explosion, while
Meaghan Galvin contributed five points as the two standouts helped the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team upend Haverford, 17-14, during a non-conference battle on Saturday at Swan Field.
In a game delayed by lightning, Culver was electric. A day after scoring six goals in the second half against Washington (Md.), the sophomore sensation established a new career-high with seven strikes against Haverford. That equals the fourth-highest single-game total in program history.
Also helping out in all facets of the game, Galvin notched three assists and two goals to go along with seven draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers.
Catie Chess, who was the last Captain to post seven goals in a game, added three strikes and eight draw controls on Saturday, while
Erin Callahan contributed a hat-trick as well.
With the victory, Christopher Newport improves to 1-2 on the season, while Haverford falls to 0-2.
After the Fords opened the scoring less than two minutes into regulation, Culver carried the Captains. In the midst of one of the hottest streaks in program history, she scored the team's first four goals, including a free-position strike and a pair of tallies aided by Galvin. Unfortunately, Haverford always seemed to have an answer and kept CNU within striking distance.
Joining the fun, Chess added her first two goals and
Tess D'Arcy stung the back of the net as well, but the Fords continued to retaliate and found themselves deadlocked at seven with just over five minutes remaining in the opening half.
Looking to regroup, CNU called a timeout. Following the stoppage, the visitors stepped up on both sides of the ball. First,
Emma Walsh stoned a shot to keep the Fords off the board before her offense went back to work. In the final 80 seconds of the period, the squad showed off its quick-strike capabilities as
Lindsay Weaver converted an eight-meter attempt before
Samantha Wettengel connected with Callahan, who snapped off a dart to grab a 9-7 lead entering halftime.
The break did little to slow down the offensive production of either team. Culver came out of halftime with her fifth goal before Haverford deposited one of its own. Moments later, during the span of two minutes, Chess added her third strike before Galvin converted back-to-back free-position attempts, which handed the Captains a 13-8 lead with 24 minutes remaining in regulation.
Although Haverford scored three straight goals, the night belonged to Culver. The second-year star added her final two tallies to snatch a 15-12 lead with eight minutes left. Although the Fords were able to toss two more goals on the board, Callahan shot back with a pair of her own to keep the opposition at bay and seal the 17-14 victory.
Overall, Christopher Newport held a 24-23 edge in shots and a 13-12 lead in ground balls. On an individual level,
Mackenzie Regen led the squad with three ground balls, while
Mariah Ginebra also had a pair to help anchor the defense. Meanwhile, Walsh earned the victory after making five saves for CNU, while
Kaitlyn Ready made her collegiate debut and worked the final 21 minutes between the pipes.
CNU will return to action on Wednesday when the team hosts Virginia Wesleyan at 4 p.m.
