Men's Basketball Game Notes
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The postseason starts now. For both of CNU's nationally-ranked top ten basketball teams, the run at a championship will begin on Thursday night with the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals, as the top-seeded Captains will host a doubleheader beginning at 6:00 pm.
For the women, CNU seeks it's first CAC Championship, and the men are looking to repeat after earning the program's first title a year ago. The first step in that quest begins with the 8th-ranked Christopher Newport women, carrying a 23-2 overall record into the tournament, taking on fourth-seeded York College of Pennsylvania (18-8). Immediately following the women's semifinal, the No. 3 CNU men, also with a 23-2 overall mark, will host #4 Marymount University (13-13) at approximately 8:00 pm.Â
Live stats and live video will be available for both games, with links found at the top of this page, or via the schedules on CNUsports.com.Â
The NCAA Regional Rankings were released on Thursday afternoon, listing the CNU men as the top team in the Mid-Atlantic, while the women are ranked fifth, just one spot behind Mary Washington and two in front of Marymount. The Salisbury men, ranked sixth, rounds out the CAC programs listed in the latest regional rankings, which will be used by the NCAA National Championship Committee to select the tournament field this weekend.Â
The Freeman Center has proven to be a big home court advantage for the Captains this season, as the two programs have combined to go 24-1 on C.J. Woollum Court. The men's team has been exceptional at home for the better part of two seasons, running their home win streak to 24 straight games. That run currently stands as the longest in the country.Â
The women's teams should be very familiar with their game plans, as the Captains and Spartans matched up in the regular season finale last Saturday. CNU traveled to York, Pa. and came away with a regular season title-clinching win, 64-53. Four Captains finished in double figures, led by 18 from junior leading scorer
Sam Porter. Since that game, York hosted #5 Frostburg State in the CAC Tournament First Round and held on for a 72-62 win over the Bobcats. Senior Sam Hruz had a double-double and junior Morgan Kuehne added a team-high 18 points.Â
Powered by a career night from their junior leader Dimitri Rucker, the Marymount men's team squeaked past St. Mary's (Md.) in their opening round matchup on Tuesday night. Rucker scored a career-high 25 points and added eight rebounds to lead the way for the Saints, who will be playing in the CAC Semifinals for the first time since 2009. CNU wrapped up their second straight regular season conference crown with a win at York (Pa.) last Saturday, and will look to defend it's tournament crown starting on Thursday night. CNU is led by the nation's best scoring defense (56.4 ppg), and has held opponents to opponents to 60 points or less on 18 different occasions this season.Â
Ticket prices for Thursday's are $8 for chairback seating and $5 for general admission. Â CNU students with a valid ID will be admitted free of charge.Â
