Captains Win 17th Straight to Complete Regular Season...Third-Ranked CNU Downs York, 70-59

YORK, Pa. – Christopher Newport, ranked third in the nation, ended the regular season with a flourish on Saturday, coming from behind at halftime to record a 70-59 triumph at York College. The Captains, who had already captured the Capital Athletic Conference's regular-season crown and top seed in next week's post-season tournament, out-scored the Spartans in the second stanza, 40-27, to win for the 17th straight time.

Senior big man Tim Daly registered his fourth double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead the way. Junior Marcus Carter added 13 points, while senior guards Rayshard Brown (12) and Kevin Regimbal (10) also reached double digits.

"They gave us a good test today," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "We had to work for this win, and that will help us as we head to the post-season. York plays hard and defended us well. I'm proud of the way we battled and the determination we had."

Junior Aaron McFarland scored six points to reach 1,000 for his career. McFarland became the 32nd player in CNU's 50-year history to reach the plateau in the second half by draining two free throws. He joined fellow Captains Daly and Carter, who both went over 1,000 career points earlier this season.

York led by as many as nine in the opening half, 26-17, before the Captains rallied with a 13-4 run to pull even, 30-30. The Spartans then ended the first half scoring to take a 32-30 advantage to the locker room at halftime.

Christopher Newport trailed 37-36 in the second half before jumping ahead for good. CNU out-scored the Spartans down the stretch, 34-22, to post the 11-point verdict.

CNU's defense, ranked first in the country in points allowed and opponent field goal percentage, held the Spartans to just 29 percent shooting (8 of 28) in the second stanza. The effort marked the 18th time in 25 games this season the Captains have held their opponents to 60 points or less.

The Captains will begin defense of their CAC title on Thursday night at the Freeman Center in the semi-final round of the CAC Tournament. CNU will play the winner of Tuesday's quarterfinal contest between St. Mary's and Marymount. Game time will be 8:00 p.m.

CNU is now 23-2 overall and won the conference race by three games with a 17-1 CAC mark. Second-place Salisbury lost in overtime on Saturday at Frostburg State, 86-80, to finish 14-4 in league play.

The Captains, who advanced to the Final Four last season for the first time in program history, are 13-0 at home this season and have won 24 straight games at the Freeman Center. CNU's last home loss came on December 30, 2015, to Scranton in the Championship of the Captains Shootout.
