NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport and Wesley College will tangle Sunday in a men's and women's basketball doubleheader at the Freeman Center. The women's action will begin at 2:00 p.m. followed by the men's game at approximately 4:00 p.m. The Captains and Wolverines will battle in Capital Athletic Conference play.
The CNU women are off to a 7-0 start, and the Captains are 3-0 atop the CAC tied with York and Marymount.
Bill Broderick's squad is coming off a dominant 73-42 triumph at St. Mary's on Wednesday evening. Junior Jessica Daguilh (11 points) and sophomore Kiana Kirkland (ten points) came off the bench to lead the Captains in scoring against the Seahawks. CNU jumped to a 22-7 lead after the opening quarter and never looked back in the 31-point victory. Christopher Newport continues to be ranked second and third in the country in two national weekly women's polls
The Captains will be taking on a Wesley squad that is 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the CAC. The Wolverines have dropped their last two games, including an 82-75 setback at Southern Virginia on December 2nd.
On the men's side, the Captains are 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the CAC.
John Krikorian's team is fresh off a 76-52 triumph at St. Mary's Wednesday night. Senior
Aaron McFarland led the way with a game-high 22 points while fellow senior
Spencer Marin tallied a career-high 19 points and nine rebounds.
The Wesley men's team is 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the CAC. The Wolverines have lost two straight, including a 93-63 defeat at Southern Virginia on December 2nd.
Sunday's doubleheader will be streamed live on CNUsports.com/live. The men's game will also be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 3:40 p.m.
Sunday's games will be the final home games for the CNU squads prior to the holiday break. Tickets will be available at the Freeman Center Ticket Office Sunday afternoon.
