NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The 2017 Christopher Newport football season comes to a close Saturday afternoon, when the Captains travel to Dover, Delaware, to take on the Wolverines of Wesley College. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. at Drass Field in Scott D. Miller Stadium.
The Captains look to bounce back from a 21-19 home loss last Saturday to the College of New Jersey.
Art Link's squad is now 5-4 overall and 4-4 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, and the Captains have lost three of their last four.
"This week is important to us for a number of reasons," Link said. "We've got a great group of seniors who will be playing for the last time as a Captain, and we want to send them out in the right way. We also have a large number of student-athletes we expect to return to the program, and this game will help the evaluation process as we move forward."
Wesley, ranked 13th in the country, enters play with an 8-1 overall mark, and a perfect 8-0 record in the NJAC. The Wolverines have already wrapped up the league title, thanks to a 30-20 home triumph last Saturday over Salisbury. Mike Drass' squad will be making its 13th straight NCAA Tournament appearance when the 32-team tournament begins next week. The meeting will be the fifth all-time of the schools, and Wesley holds a 3-1 edge in the series. CNU defeated the Wolverines last season at POMOCO Stadium, 42-28.
Christopher Newport has been led by a strong defense all season, and last week senior cornerback
Tyrell Noel set a new school mark. Noel intercepted his seventh pass of the season, a new CNU single season record. He and fellow senior cornerback
Justus Drakeford have combined for 12 picks this season in the first nine games, and the Captains have intercepted 18 passes as a team.
The season finale closes the curtain on the 17th season of CNU football, and the first with
Art Link at the helm. Saturday's matinee will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 11:30 a.m.
