Box Score in HTML Format

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Continuing the show of dominance that has been on display all season long, the 8th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team cruised to it's second straight Capital Athletic Conference Championship on a beautiful Saturday night at Captains Field, dropping second-seeded Frostburg State University by a final score of 4-0.

The Captains' victory was never in doubt in the conference title game, as the league's leading offense and defense continued it's exceptional performance this season en route to setting a new program record for wins in a season. The victory improved CNU's record to 18-0-1 while adding to the longest winning streak in program history, now at 16, and besting last year's 17-win mark as the best all time.

Along with the team milestone, Christopher Newport senior goalkeeper Carly Maglio notched another of her own as she celebrated her 50th career victory with the conference championship. The Richmond, Va. native was joins Justin Wolfe as the only CNU goalkeepers, men or women, to earn 50 wins in their career. On Saturday, Maglio was nearly untested with the support of her terrific back line, facing just one shot on-goal.

Christopher Newport became the first team to win back-to-back CAC Women's Soccer Championships since the 2003-04 seasons when Mary Washington was capping off a run of four straight league titles. The 4-0 win was also the largest margin of victory in a CAC women's soccer final since Salisbury beat St. Mary's by the same score in 2006.

In the game, CNU outshot Frostburg State, 35-3, and the defense allowed only two shots on-goal. The back line, led by senior Danielle Pratt with sophomores Shaye Doherty, Keiley McCarthy, and rookie Alexi Manley managed to keep Frostburg State out of their attacking zone for the majority of the contest. CNU also only gave up a pair of corner kicks as they locked down defensively. It was the 11th shutout of the year for CNU, who outscored conference competition in the regular season and tournament this year by a final tally of 44-2.

On the offensive end, it was another scorching performance from the Captains attacking players, who have now scored multiple goals in nine of the last ten games. Despite taking 20 shots in the first half, including 10 on-frame, though, the Captains would only lead 1-0 at the break courtesy of a late goal from senior Alex Miller. A pretty play started up the right side from Maxine Borris was finished when Taylor Hudgins quickly flicked a pass to Miller for a shot from close-range. The senior forward finished off the eventual game-winning goal in the 42nd minute to give the Captains a lift into halftime with her fifth goal of the season.

The offense came out firing in the second half and quickly turned the close game into a blowout. First, just under seven minutes into the second half the Captains junior leader, Gabby Gillis, put away a fantastic goal from outside the box. After dribbling toward the 18 from the left side, Gillis found enough space to smash a line drive off the right post and into the back of the net for the score. It was her 13th goal of the year and gave the Captains a 2-0 cushion.

Then, in the span of just over three minutes in the middle of the second half, CNU tacked on two more goals to run away with the win. First, a highlight-reel header from Keiley McCarthy would make it 3-0, as she powered home the goal off a corner kick from Carson Pokorny. Pokorny registered her 12th helper of the season, pulling into a tie for the second most in a single season at CNU. Finally, rookie Victoria Reed scored her first career goal off Borris' second assist of the day when she crushed a one-timer into the right side of the goal. In the 74th minute, Borris saved the ball off the goal line and connected with Reed on a short pass for the score.

With the loss, Frostburg State closes the season with a 9-8-2 overall record.

CNU earns the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Championship Tournament for the second straight year and will play in the NCAA first-round next weekend. Christopher Newport will now await the decision of the NCAA Championship Committee for their first-round opponent and game location. The 64-team bracket will be announced via a live webcast on NCAA.com this Monday, November 6 at 1:00 pm. This will be the 10th NCAA Tournament appearance for the Captains, including four in the first five years under head coach Dan Weiler.
