NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The 2017 home schedule comes to a close Saturday, as the Captains of Christopher Newport host the Lions of the College of New Jersey. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at POMOCO Stadium, and the New Jersey Athletic Conference tilt not only comes during Homecoming weekend celebrations, but also will serve as Senior Day as the Captains honor and recognize their 24 senior class members prior to the start.
"They're a great group," Head Coach
Art Link said. "Our senior class has made my job a lot easier this season, and we're going to miss them. It would have been nice to send them out with a playoff appearance, but I think we're all excited about the next two games and we want to send them out in the right way."
CNU is 5-3 overall and 4-3 in the NJAC. The Captains are coming off a 27-7 loss last week at Kean in Union, N.J. TCNJ is 2-6 heading into play Saturday, and the Lions are 2-5 in conference play following a 20-0 victory last week at William Paterson. The matchup will be the third all-time, and the Captains have won both previous meetings by scores of 31-21 and 17-0. Both squads are led by first-year head coaches and have followed very different paths this season.
Art Link's Captains opened the year by winning four of five, and have now lost two of the last three games. Casey Goff's Lions lost their first five games this fall, and have since bounced back to win two of the last three.
Following Saturday's home finale, the Captains will close out the 2017 campaign next Saturday on the road at Wesley College in Dover, Delaware.
Tickets for the final home game of 2017 are still available, and gates will open at 12 noon Saturday at POMOCOÂ Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on CNUsports.com/live and the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 12:30 p.m.
