Men's Basketball Travels to Hood College for Weekend Tournament

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport, fresh off a season-opening victory at Randolph-Macon Wednesday night, travels to Frederick, Maryland, this weekend for the Rotary of Frederick Holiday Classic. The Captains will take on Catholic University Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in the opening round of the two-day tournament. Host Hood College will battle Wilmington (OH) in the second game Saturday beginning at 6:00 p.m. The tourney will conclude on Sunday with the third-place game at 1:00 p.m. followed by the title game at 3:00 p.m.

John Krikorian's squad emerged with a 69-64 victory over Randolph-Macon thanks to a hard-fought effort. The game featured 15 lead changes and was tied seven times. The Captains scored the final seven points in the last 1:15 of the second half to pull out the win. Senior Spencer Marin and freshman Jason Aigner led the way with 15 points each, and Aigner added a team-high eight rebounds while Marin pulled down seven. Aigner, playing in his first game as a Captain, knocked down five three-pointers in 12 attempts from beyond the arc.

The matchup with Catholic will be the fifth all-time, and the Cardinals lead the series, 3-1. The schools last met in the NCAA Tournament in 2000, with Catholic pulling out a 65-64 victory. The game Saturday will be the first game of the season for the Cardinals.

The tournament will be played at BB & T Arena in Frederick. All Captains games can be heard on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning 20 minutes prior to tipoff.
