NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport football squad travels to Salisbury Saturday for another key battle in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium.
The Captains have won their last two and are 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the NJAC. Salisbury enters play with a 3-1 mark, and a 3-0 league record. Defense again figures to be the key word, as both squads have used outstanding defensive efforts to get where they are. The Captains have the top spot in the country in forced turnovers (21), and CNU also leads the nation in turnover margin (plus 15). CNU and Salisbury are currently both tied for ninth in the country in red zone defense (stops made while the opponent is inside the 20-yard line).
Christopher Newport is coming off a dominant effort last Saturday evening in a 30-0 home victory over Rowan. The Captains set a new school record by allowing just 67 total yards all night, and also held the Profs to negative 25 yards rushing, also a new school mark. The shutout was the first for CNU first-year head coach
Art Link, and the tenth in CNU football history.
The Sea Gulls were off last weekend, and have won their last three games after a season-opening loss in overtime to Albright. While Salisbury is undefeated in conference action, their three opponents have posted just a 1-11 record so far this year. The Gulls have won over William Paterson (0-4), Kean (1-3), and the College of New Jersey (0-4).
The matinee Saturday will be the 16th meeting all-time, and the Sea Gulls hold a 10-5 advantage in the series. Amazingly, the Captains have the edge in the series in games played in Salisbury, 4-3, and the last six meetings have been won by the visiting team.
Last year at POMOCO Stadium, the Sea Gulls registered a 45-24 victory. Two seasons back in 2015, the Captains recorded a 51-39 triumph at Sea Gull Stadium. The all-time series began on the very first day of CNU football, September 1, 2001, when the Sea Gulls beat the Captains, 21-6, in the first game in CNU football history.
Saturday's action will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 12:30 p.m.
